MXM GPUs

Hi! This thread is the result of a long research. MXM Gpu cards were really difficult to find but I think that a list of  MXM GPU could help.

There are not a lot of sources for these cards so any help is really appreciated

http://www.notebookreview.com/howto/how-to-upgrade-nvidia-mxm-notebook-graphics-cards/

Not all MXM cards are the same.

MXM is supposed to make repairs and upgrades easier.

  • 1 month later...

This is some great info. If/when I need to upgrade my GT780DXR again this will come in handy. I already bumped it up from a 570m to a 770m but a 1070 would be interesting too.

As a side note, you may want to add some extra info about the differences between vBIOS versions and manufacturer locked cards for those who choose to go the used route.

For instance an Alienware vBIOS loaded card will not work in an MSI laptop and often vice-versa; in fact there has been cases where the physical design is the same but the electrical layout of the card is different between manufacturers which makes flashing the vBIOS a pointless waste of time. The 700 series is especially bad for this.

Heatsinks is another issue as the cards move up in design the component layout changes. For instance the die of a 500m series card is much bigger than a 700 or 900 series card making the mounting points a little off without modifications. RAM and VRM locations also change from card to card making life difficult as well. I had to take a die grinder to my 570m heatsink to remove several pads to prevent shorts on my 770m; didn't cause any reduction in cooling, but could have made an expensive purchase even worse in a quick second.

There are BIOS and vBIOS mods out there for every manufacturer and people like svet on the MSI forums have a lot of experience making and modifying them, as well as the tools to do so.

There's a lot of research that goes into these supposedly simple upgrades, that's for sure.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

HP Z2 Mini G3
https://www.computerpoweruser.com/article/24227/review-hp-z2-mini-g3

"
On the unit we tested, in addition to the on-die Intel HD Graphics 530, there’s also a discrete GPU in the form of NVIDIA’s Quadro M620, which sports a cut-down version of the Maxwell-based GeForce GTX 750 Ti’s GPU, with 512 CUDA cores, 32 texture mapping units, 16 ROPs, and 2GB GDDR5 running on a 128-bit bus. Although it’s not much of a gaming GPU, this 1TFLOP- (single precision floating-point) capable GPU is significantly better at managing the workloads typical of CAD applications. This is an MXM card, and together with the SO-DIMM slots, are about the only components in this system that can be called mobile-grade."

"Now aftermarket availability for upgrading down the road is a very valid concern but ASRock has iterated that they’re working with the MXM card vendors Aetina and TUL to ensure there are affordable and readily available upgrade options for future GPU generations (like Vega)."
