Fatal flaws in your favorite cases?

Business Corgi

It can be more than one thing :P

Obviously this is very objective, but I'm curious about what keeps any case from being the PERFECT case for you. Maybe it's a mix of features that just isn't available in a particular style or something one manufacturer does but not another. Or a dopey design decision.

For me, it's the absolute shit-tier airflow in the Phanteks Evolv series of cases.

3VA0uv3.jpg

This is my favorite ITX case on the market and it's absolutely ruined by the fact that it is starved for airflow. I don't know if the full or mid tower versions are any better (the Jay vid seems to indicate otherwise and he has a fully custom loop) but I couldn't keep this thing cool loaded with Noctua UH-14S fans and a Noctua NH-D15. It was worse with an AIO since I could only mount the cooler on top where the only place for air to enter/escape are tiny slits.

These would be the best cases on the market IMO, if they would just add more perforation to the front and top.

HP-Z820-Desktop-Tower-Workstation-with-D

you can only get it with a $7000 workstation. i'd call that a pretty big flaw :P

Well for the masterbox 5 its the lack of rubber gromits, the placement of the cable holes and the fact that there is only 1 set of holes for fans at the top, even though it has the spaceing for a radiator. oh and the psu shoud doent cover the right side (not so bad if you are using the hard drive caddys but still

Cant really think of any for my s340.

Maybe the fact it only has a single 120/140mm fan mount on the top, when there's easily room for two.

Corsair 400C :

It looks amazing from the outside, and thought it would be a great replacement for my S340. The Shroud really is the issue, With only one gap for you to run USB & Audio Headers, The GPU Power cables are so out of position. The boring old style Grommets to help cable managment is Kek, like other cases the do a angeled bar with smaller cut outs.

8.jpg.ec25945e4bbbb6f53acad861a72268df.jpg

The 3 SSD caddieson the back are horrible and just get in the way so often and overall it looks great and modern on the outside but inside its just a old chassis with fancy outside.

One of the biggerst let downs for me.

Good that you use the Phanteks Evolv as example. I almost bought the Matx TG version. I can mod it to open up more for the front panel and the top, so air flow is less of a problem. The hardest thing to get around is to find a place for the tube reservoir and pump without either removing the two 3.5 inch hard drive bay, or put the reservoir in a very odd place, while still have two 240mm radiators.

I really wish that Fractal would make the R5 without the optical drives, or a very small space for a slotted optical drive. I'd like the option for bigger rads or 3 fans in the front.

Some In Win cases have the same problem, e.g. 805. nice looking temper glass, but shitty air flow. But the king of poop looks over function must go to Lian Li.

Yeah it's fantastic case. If I go full ATX, I'd like to have 3 x 240 rad support.

However I prefer smaller MATX, while still supports 2 x 240mm rad custom loop. Still searching.....

You and me both pal, I was looking at the CaseLabs Nova X2M but it doesn't have a PSU shroud and no tempered glass and having worked with tempered glass I just have to have it.

I really like the new corsair 460x and 570x cases, but they dont have 5.25 bays anymore. Im old school and I like having an optical drive or a card reader in my case.

Corsair 330R:

- cant remove/relocate drive bays

- cant mopunt ssd on the backside

I just don't get how corsair would think thats a good idea.

I choose the case 3 month ago because i was frustrated af. I can't find a proper case for me. I dont want see-through sidepanels. I just want to have a nice looking mid (or even full) tower where i can frontmount my i115h w/ noctua nf-a14 ppc and don't collide with my graphics card (1070 amp extreme), have 4 drivebays (2 ssds, 2 hdd). going with the 330r was the because i can close the top even with rad+fans beneath since the are exhausting.

in the 330r i can lay down the top panel so the air can escape from the exhausing i115h. so it shields the noise quiet well. but thats not ideal. when under full load i remove it ofc.

Enthoo Evolv ATX Glass:

  • Phanteks Enthoo Evolv ATX Computer Case - Tempered Glass Edition, Anthracite Grey PH-ES515ETG_AG

Cons:

  • 40+pound case
  • On my mobo, (MSI B350 Tomahawk Arctic) neither usb3 header is in a good spot for cablemanagement, The center grommets in the case are on a slope, and the bottom holes are right up on the bottom of the mobo
  • No buzzer/speaker/beep
  • inside and back are black even on the grey case.
  • plastic 3.5 drive sleds in the back, but metal 3.5 drive shelves in front, and the drive mounting pins on the plastic ones seem chintzy
  • 4 random screws on the front side of the basement make no sense, I think they might be a 2.5 ssd mount
  • basement has a window to the power supply on the front

Pros:

  • it looks so, so good.
  • so many drive bay slots available, a max of like 10 if you order extra 3.5 brackets
  • the 3.5 brackets all have 2.5 mount holes

TBH these cons are minor. I still love the case.

The Silverstone Sugo sg13:

Image result for sg13

It's a boring case. Don't get me wrong, I love the layout. It's got excellent hardware compatibility for how small it is, but it just looks boring. There's no windows, no where to put in cool rgb lighting, no extra frills. It's just a plain black box.

The Corsair Crystal 570x is such a beautiful case, but there is one glaring issue that kept me from getting it: the psu shroud is open on the end. Either make it run the full length of the case, or close it off. Either would be fine. But leaving it open is stupid. It's like walking around with ass-less chaps in public; your dirty work is hanging out.

Yup. I've got the gray one as well, and I've heard the airflow is terrible, and it's massive and a bit hard to move around when I'm messing with it, but it's big, sturdy, and soooo good looking.

  1. I have no idea what model it is or even who manufactured it. (meaning I can't provide proper pics)
  2. the integrated RGB LEDS (Yes, my 11 year old case had RGB) have died
  3. Can only use an 80mm x 2 radiator in the back if I want watercooling
  4. IO is obsolete

Absolute favorite case.

Phanteks Evolv ATX TG:

Absolute crap airflow and no real possibility of Water cooling if you plan to do anything with the computer except look at it.   Not unless you want to mod the case a lot.

Corsair 570X:

PSU shroud is too short.   Cable management is very Meh...   Very tight for watercooling.

Caselabs SMA8:

The only shortcoming is that it is like having the Monolith from 2001 a Space Odyssey on your desk.
