How do I troubleshoot a graphics card and PCI slot on an old motherboard?

Hello,

I have a very old PC, which is the last PC I built and I have been only using laptops for a few years. A few days ago I decided to take my old PC out and do a fresh Windows 7 install on it, check to see if it works and sell it.

Good thing is, it still works.

Bad thing is, I don't know who will probably even buy it and if I really won't be able to sell it, what will I do with this perfectly working PC? (that's another dilemma which is irrelevant to this topic)

 

It has the following hardware:

Intel Pentium E5300 processor

Intel DG31PR motherboard

3GB DDR2 RAM 800MHz

320GB HDD (I think it was dying, but the new Windows 7 probably brought it back to life )

NVIDIA 9500GT graphics card (most probably dead)

 

About the graphics card: I tried plugging in a VGA cable and the PC didn't show any video output, so I removed the graphics card and the motherboard VGA video output works. Now I am not sure if the PCIe slot is faulty or the graphics card. How do I know where is the fault?

Put the graphics card in a different pc? Even without drivers it should work, i mean a display signal is all you need doesn't matter how shitty it is.

If it was the PCIe slot the system would most likely not be able to boot with a gpu installed. If you have another gpu, try it out. Or, try out the 9500GT in another system.
