Source 2: https://www.forbes.com/sites/patrickmoorhead/2017/05/31/nvidia-slims-down-gaming-laptops-with-new-max-q-technology/#5f4bc3c3374b

  • Traditionally, Nvidia has sought to deliver peak performance, but the last few performance points come at a disproportionately high power cost, meaning more space is required in order to dissipate the heat.

  • Now, NVIDIA is looking to find the fastest and most power-optimized performance level to allow for laptops under 20mm thick AND sport a GTX 1080.

  • This week at Computex,  NVIDIA announced a new program and design specification called MAX-Q that will enable any of NVIDIA’s partners sacrifice 10% of the card’s performance for better cooling an quieter operation.

  • Mazx Q uses:

    • smart fan algorithms to dynamically adjust to the different power states of the GPU

    • WhisperMode that uses FPS targeting which allows the user to target a certain frame rate within the game that they deem acceptable. Once that targeting is completed, the GPU will only take on as much load as is needed to display the game at that frame rate

‘Anti AI’ AI for the Post-Truth era!

  • DT R&D has prototyped a device to help you know when the voice speaking to you belongs not to a human, but to AI.

  • Worn on the ear and connected to a neural net trained on real and synthetic voices, the device notifies the wearer when a synthetic voice is detected by cooling the skin on the back of your neck!

    • “By using a 4x4mm thermoelectric Peltier plate we were able to create a noticeable chill on the skin near the back of the neck “

Big Leagues: $10 Million League Of Legends Tournament

Source 1:  https://www.gamespot.com/articles/10-million-is-the-price-for-teams-to-join-revamped/1100-6450508/

Source 2:  https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-06-01/to-buy-into-this-video-gaming-league-it-s-at-least-10-million

  • League Championship Series is changing its structure to become something that will more closely resemble the massive traditional sports leagues like the NBA or NFL

  • Under the new LCS structure, there will be 10 teams that are always in the mix, instead of squads that rotate

  • Team applications for the new LCS opened today: The buy-in price is $10 million!

  • Players on the 10 selected teams get a guaranteed salary of at least $75,000.

  • Riot Games said its end goal is to "create a strong and stable system that's profitable for pro players and provides entertainment for fans in the long term."

  • There are three major pillars of the changes, including revenue-sharing, protecting and supporting pro players (with a players' association and more), and changes to the structure to encourage long-term investments.

  • Once the 10 teams are determined, they are in the league for good.

  • Riot says that it will offer incentives to teams that play well and penalise the squads that purposefully stay at the bottom of the ladder.

Microsoft rolls out not one but two bad builds to the Windows Insider program

Source 1: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/06/microsoft-rolls-out-not-one-but-two-bad-builds-to-the-windows-insider-program/

  • Microsoft accidently released two different builds—one for desktop users, another for mobile—to their Windows Insider program.

  • In both cases, systems configured to use the fast ring could find themselves downloading and installing Windows releases that weren't supposed to ship to the general public

  • The mobile is especially bad: phones that install it will get stuck in a boot loop, and the only way to restore them is to use the Windows Device Recovery Tool. This will wipe the entire phone and flash it with a working firmware.

Scientists discover how the brain recognises faces – by reading monkey's minds

Source 1: https://www.theguardian.com/science/2017/jun/01/scientists-discover-how-the-brain-recognises-faces-by-reading-monkeys-minds

  • DScientists have created eerily perfect replicas of human faces that were shown to monkeys just from recording the animal’s brain waves

  • The researchers developed an algorithm that could decode previously unseen faces from neural responses recorded from directly from the brains of two monkeys.

  • Electrical recordings made from around 100 neurons in the face patch regions of each monkey were enough to recreate almost identical images to those seen by the animals.
