Do you have a 3D printer?

Nonco

Ive been considering getting a 3D printer, but I dont know how much use it would actually get.

If you have one, what are your thoughts after having it for a little while.

Do you still use it lots or has it become a dust collector?

What printer did you get? Do you recommend it for others?

have a modded davinci 1.0a modded with a e3d v6 hotend and custom fw along with alot of other mods. can say after a year of owning it... its still exactly what it is.... something to print random things i find every once in a while... maybe prototype something but besides that its collected dust. ive designed maybe 3 items in over a year. mostly what you will be doin with it is just basically, oh thats a cool thing on thingaverse lets print it and thats about it.

i do not recommend this printer in stock fw and setup... you need to mod it to be decent

I have a Makebot sitting next to my computer. I do use it but it's mainly used by my wife's high school classes. I tend to use it to make prototypes of parts for my cars or other odd projects. But I would say about 70% of the time it's collecting dust.

I have a Makerbot (the big orange one). It's great for little things (laptop dock, cable management stuff, headphone holders etc) that would cost like $20. I also use it for fun, and for printing miniature models of room designs for clients.

Get a wife.

Prints baby, food, and can do chores too. If lucky, also earns money. Does much more.

Yes its not exactly cheap to maintain at the start but should ultimately pay off.

Agreed.

No need to worry about dust.

Disagreed. I'm the one who usually ends up cleaning...

I've had a Ultimaker 2 for a couple years now and granted I don't use it as much as I thought I would but I wouldn't say it's collecting dust.  The wife and kids do print a lot of novelty items but we live almost a hour away from the nearest major store in northern Minnesota so it's definitely worth the cost for us.  There's been a few times where it's saved me a two hour round trip to the hardware store.

Do you do interior design or something?

I work in building drafting, have you ever tried printing small house models too?

Occasionally, I do a lot of rendering based on plans, for marketing material and such;

That kind of thing. I've done some full house prints, but they normally end up solid because my printer is fairly low end and can't manage the hollow spaces very well.

Oh yeah thats cool. Ive been interested in getting into more visualization rendering kinda work.

What software do you use?

I mostly use ArchiCAD, but ive had some experience with Lumion too.

This was done with archicad: 3a8b74db96.jpg

Looking at it now I think its a bit dark and probably should have done some touch ups in photoshop or something.

That looks really good, half an hour in Photoshop will do it. I get Revit files from clients, render them in 3dsMax (usually MentalRay) and then edit in Photoshop.

Ah yeah nice, how did you learn to use the software? Self taught or did you do a course in arch vis or something?

So I studied industrial Design for 2.5 years before switching to Computer Science, so I was pretty good with rendering (just with Keyshot though) and Photoshop, then I worked for a company that did architectural renders and basically learnt as I went. Max isn't too bad, once you figure out the controls and I can Photoshop in my sleep now...

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been thinking about getting one but I just don't know if I could justify the price. I've got a few projects id love to do but I think it might collect dust after that.
