personally I would recommend going with a 6800k or a 6850k so you can get better multi threaded performance but that just what I would do

Asus Z170?   Shouldn't you go for the Z270 chipset?

It's compatible though I've seen the

Potential Issues / Incompatibilities from PCPartpicker, Some Intel Z170 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Kaby Lake-S CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions.

Correct. Unless the BIOS on the board supports Kaby Lake, you would need to do a BIOS upgrade prior to being able to use it. I believe Asus has the availability to do BIOS flashing without a CPU installed, correct me if I am wrong.

I think my friend really wanted the features on the Deluxe mobo which I can't find one for the z270 yet.

Which means you would have to buy a whole new CPU, which has to be Skylake, just to update the board's BIOS. It's cheaper and just more efficient to just buy a Z270 motherboard.

Yeah I figured, guess we'll have to a decent featured mobo close to a deluxe one.

You dont need a CPU to do a BIOS flash with ASUS anymore.

In maybe 6 months, the next wave of the "Extreme" processors (successor to 6800K and higher) will be out with PCIe 4.0.

looking at the 2, the big difference between the one in my list and the Deluxe is the built in wifi and maybe 2 more USB ports.

If I remember correctly, he has the ROG router, which I believe he will be plugging in via ethernet cable. So it's not WiFi, maybe a killer built-in sound card perhaps?

What is the pc being used for ? as 64GB Ram is a hell of a lot for most systems unless it is some sort of extreme workstation in which case you should be going X99 or Ryzen (Although Ram support is a bit hit and miss at present)

Also does your friend have a 4K monitor already ? As 1080 ti SLI will be wasted on anything less. Have you/he considered a widescreen 1440p instead ?

from what I am reading, the Realtek S1220A on the Z270 board is the better chip between the 2 boards for audio.

I do think 64gb on just quad core is overkill and just plain wasteful, so I'm gonna point him out about picking a different platform for more core/threaded chips. Also, he will be uprading to a 144hz 32" ultrawide.

Also, this quote is taken directly from an asus rep on the Asus forums regarding the Z270 deluxe:

No Z270-Deluxe is planned, sorry. Its role is filled by the Maximus IX Code.

Which 32" Monitor is that ? As all 4K are currently 60Hz. There are some 144Hz 4K in the pipeline but they are not out yet.

So is he doing anything else apart from gaming ? i.e Video editing/rendering or twitch streaming etc ?

I doubt he'll use it for content creation. More likely gaming/streaming (MMO-RPGs) and minor school work projects.

I am personally not an ASUS fan so I wouldnt buy it personally. (Though I did just buy an H110 board for my pfsense build from asus)

As others have stated. a more black build like with an EVGA board would be more ideal and go with white accents with white sleeved cables would be sexy AF.

Definitely. I don't think he's interested on doing custom loops so I'm guessing it's either the HERO or CODE.
