its not important but its free preformance if you have the time to do it. i overclock everything i can, GPU, CPU, RAM, Monitors

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

i'm thinking of buying a new upgrade for my i7 3770 (non k) if it's offer only a little performance boost, i might as well get an h270 motherboard and i7 7700 (non k) i never overclock though, so might take some time to learn it

overclocking is pretty easy but it takes time to make sure everything works fine so your computer is kind of out of order while doing any overclocking. its worth it to me but i can see how many dont bother. also i basically consider monitor overclocking mandetory on 60Hz panels now, if you can get it over 70Hz there is a verry noticable differance and then you dont want to go back lol

it really depends on how well a cpu overclocks some generations of cpus had very large headroom for overclocking and would give quite a bit of performance from overclocking while some have almost none. i know for me I have a r7 1700 so overclocking is almost necessary to get the type of performance i want. that being said i went with an easy modest overclock as i didn't want to do all the work to get the last 300mhz as it doesn't seem like it would make a huge difference anyways.

okay let's say i want to overclock, what's the ideal psu wattage for that?

It really only matters if you are reaching bandwidth limits and need more. For example if you have a 120Hz monitor but games are only reaching 100 fps maybe an overclock could help you get the full 120Hz refresh rate you're looking for.

well i'm still planing on upgrading my cpu and motherboard, if i had to get an z270 motherboard, i would say asrock z270 extreme 4, with intel core i7 7700k, and cooler master hyper 212 evo

For 144hz, yeah, it's pretty important. Otherwise, you can get away with a locked i7, though getting an unlocked one will last you a bit longer.

Also there is base clock overclocking as well. So? Your post is more unrelated. Also OP did say Intel or Amd, you should read next time.

it is though, just takes time. sure you wont get far on the stock cooler from Intel but you can still do it, throw on a Hyper 212 which you shold get as a minimum and you can overclock away quite a bit. GPUs it is free preformance, you buy the GPU and you overclock it to get more preformance out of it. you get more for your money for just a little bit of your time. monitors aswel, takes just a little while and bam, better refreshrate. RAM too, you get your sticks, you overclock and bam, more preformance.

aww, have you tried different timings? can help quite a bit and manual ones can really help sometimes. got 75Hz instead of 66Hz by switching my timings from auto to CVT or CVT reduced blank :)

yes there is, not as much as Intel but there is LOTS or Ryzen and even people talking about overclocking there FX chips and compareing preformance. its not always but AMD has a fairy small marketshare over all and thats why.

@MrUnknownEMC He the thread poster has no said thought of upgrading to amd, he is looking at the 7700k as his quote says... so AMD has nothing to do with what he planning on doing... and how dose people overclocking there FX chips or ryzen have anything to do with with what this guy wants to do

What are you even talking about? Can you structure your sentences and wording probably. If he looking at 7700k, why can't he consider an AMD system?

OK I am sticking with my "It aint free" because its not free.

For intel anyway you need to buy the K chip and more expensive mobo.

For AMD sure you dont need those special thingy's

but it will not be free

Why do you ask?

Go look at your electrical bill please.

and finally - Time IS money!
