New fans are too noisy.

Dany4k

Hello LTT Forum!

I just finished installing some new fans on my PC and it got a lot noisier than it should.

I have a Zalman Z3 case and replaced both back and front fan with some Corsair AF120 Silent fans.

The back fan is connected in the mobo as the original was but the front one was connected to the PSU and the new one I installed I connected it to the mobo (SYSFAN2) and from what I have checked its running at full speed (1650rpm) and its noisy as hell. My intend with this upgrade was to reduce the noise and it got even worse.

How can I reduce the rpms? I tried messing with some settings in my mobo and it stays the same. My mobo is a MSI H81M-P33. Fans and mobo are 3 PIN.

Can you help me reduce this noise?

it's worth a try before trying and buying anything else

it really depends on what controls the bios allows the software enables. For example, i can't turn my cpu fan of in speedfan

Are all the fans too loud or just one? Stop the fans with your hands to identify the source of the noise.

Moved to Air Cooling.

From what I have checked the front one is the noisiest. CPU cooler is very sillent (evo 212) and the back one is not noisy at all.

Tutorial is good but it didn't work unfortunately. I set everything to manual and still can't controll the fans.

You said that the front fan was plugged into the power supply. If you want to control the fan speed, plug it into the motherboard.

Maybe I didn't explain myself well. My older front fan was plugged into the power supply but the new one is connected to the motherboard also.

Which header is the fan plugged into?

SYSFAN2 is just a powered header. Any fan plugged into it will run at 100%. If you want to control the fan speed, use the SYSFAN1 or CPUFAN header instead.

Cool, thanks for the tip.

Guess Im gonna need some kind of hardware to reduce the voltage.

Why not just use the SYSFAN1 or CPUFAN1 for control?

If your motherboard is unable to control the fans, a fan speed controller will be needed to slow them down.  If you have an available PCI slot in back, you can use something like this: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIACJF54N6816&cm_re=fan_controller-_-9SIACJF54N6816-_-Product (Yes, it's Chinese branded, but basically everything already comes from there anyway)

It bothers me when a large fan is rated to run at 1,500RPM or faster and is labelled "quiet" or "silent".  Having gone through a lot of fans to silence my own computer, I've found that fans only enter the truly quiet range at 1,200RPM and lower, and "silent" once you get below 800RPM.  Before I knew better, I once bought a 2,000RPM 120mm fan because it was rated at a "silent 17DBa".  Maybe they meant it was 17DBa above the average noise level of a Mack truck...
