How to fix lag (Playing straight from a Modem)?

SHAD0WxF1R3

Hello all, simple question.

Would adding a router to my setup better my connection to game servers, as anytime I play, I notice that I have errors or dropped packets. Would a router remedy this?

Currently I am jacked straight into a modem as an internet connection to my main pc. I have a modem/router combo that comcast provides that my family and I use for wifi, but it is in another room.

SImply put, buy a router or is it another problem?

Typical internet speeds:

100 mb/s Down

5 mb/s Up

Will test packet loss.

Also if you do have packet loss the only thing on your end that could be affecting it is you computer or the modem. adding a router wont make a difference.

Short answer: No

Longer but still short answer: Call your ISP, complain, get them to do line testing and see if they can fix the problem.

Believe it or not, I just bought a new router, hooked it up to my modem, and now all my connection issues are fixed!

Then your modem is defective. You could still experience issues later. I would highly suggest contacting your ISP and getting them to replace your Modem for free (assuming it's provided by them to begin with). If you bought the modem yourself, you should consider replacing it eventually.
