Budget Upgrades

I am trying to pass my old computer to my little brother, and it is a pre-built cyber pc with specs as follows.

1 TB HDD

ga 78lmt-s2 mother board

8 gb ddr3 ram

fx 4300 cpu

600 watt power supply

gtx 1060 asus turbo gpu

I told him that before I hadn't over that I would help him do some upgrades to make it run a little faster since it is really having issues tugging along.  I know for sure I am having him keep the psu and gpu. I am also having him get an SSD, and 16 gb of ram. Where I am hitting a bump is deciding if I should have him stick with the fx-4300, buying new motherboard/cooler, and doing some modest over clocking to keep the budget as low as possible, or have him go up to an i5.

We aren't looking to be completely future proof, but some longevity would be appreciated.

for the best upgrade for the cheapest amount, I would merely upgrade the CPU. You can get old AMD cpu's pretty darn cheap nowadays, and even cheaper if you look at the used market. get the strongest CPU available to your motherboard and you should be fine (although I know nothing about the old AMD sockets, so I have no idea which one that would be). It should be able to handle 60fps gaming though, whatever it is. the rest of your system spec will be able to keep up with 60 fps gaming as well. an SSD would also be beneficial if you can swing it.

Maybe wait for Ryzen if you can. It might be pretty good. But the i5 might be a good choice. You might be able to find the i5-6600k and a Z170 board on a good sale, now that KabyLake and the Z270 platform is out. I have a i5-6600k overclocked at 4.6GHz. My max thermals on Aida64 only hit 61 degrees C after 2 hours of running the test. And that is all done on a Cooler Master Hyper 212; with a good fan setup. And as far as future proofing that'd be good. It would last a very long time. You wouldn't need a new PSU, but you would need DDR4 RAM.

No way in hell you should keep that CPU. even an FX 8350 bottlenecks a 1060 6gb if I recall

Doing a quick search through amazon doing 6600k + a z170 mobo is around 350ish with the evo that puts it just shy of 400 dollars.  If I could find a decent deal on a used cpu and mobo I could be lookinga at a pretty nice updrage.  When is ryzen coming out?

Yeah don't waste money with that old motherboard and CPU. I'd look at getting a used CPU for sure, Intel products are solid. As far as a motherboard I'd be very careful, and go as far as to recommend just buying new. I have friends who have been screwed over buying a used mobo. As far as Ryzen goes it maybe be until Mayish, hard to say.

Another option if you are on a budget could be the new i3-7350k put it on a Z270 board, and then one day upgrade to the i5-7600k. That’s smart future proofing. And it gets really good performance now that it has 4 threads with hyper threading. LTT did a video on it, watch it. You could get a 5.0GHz overclock using a Hyper 212 as well.
