Steam Games and prices - Offline Mode

Canada EH

I am looking to buy some new games. I see many titles that are expensive. I doubt I will buy even a $25 game let alone a $50 or $60 game.

I bought Far Cry 3 Deluxe for under $10, I think I paid $5 for it a week or 2 ago.

So I found this for Offline Mode

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3160-AGCB-2555

Do I still need to install Steam on the computer I want to play the games on offline? I will be using a laptop.

That's why we trade for games. You can't get thousands of games otherwise unless you're rich and burn through money.

Yes. Steam is DRM/install/launch platform for games bought or activated on it. Its even said right on that page:

Please note that you must connect to the Steam Network and test each of the games you would like to use in Offline Mode at least once to set up your account and configure Offline Mode on your machine.

Meaning you need to launch each game online first if you wish to play it offline. And it continues saying same on how-to part:

Quote
  1. Start Steam online - make sure the Remember my password box on the login window is checked
  2. Verify that all game files are completely updated - you can see the update status for a game under the Library section (when the game shows as 100% - Ready it is ready to be played in Offline Mode)
  3. Launch the game you would like to play offline to verify that there are no further updates to download - shut down the game and return to Steam once you have confirmed that the game can be played
  4. Go to Steam > Settings to ensure the Don't save account credentials on this computer option is not selected
  5. From the main Steam window, go to the Steam menu and select Go Offline
  6. Click Restart in Offline Mode to restart Steam in Offline Mode

AFAIK, that glitch to get free games doesn't work anymore.

There's another way to do it, but you have to inject this thingy into the process as Steam is logging into your account.

I'm pretty sure they'll remove those games, though.

How does trading games work?

You need to buy as gift. Only gift codes can be traded.
