Which camera (especially for video)?

Hey guys,

Looking for a camera that takes amazing video for cinematic films/short films, and other video in general. Nice photos would also be a plus. I am looking at 3 types of cameras-Mirrorless, DSLR, and camcorders. Budget is $700. $800 MAX (with lens). Which would be the best?

Here are some options:

Mirrorless camera
-Sony a6000 ~$600 with 1 lens
-LUMIX g7 ~$590 with 1 lens
-LUMIX gx85 (the problem is it has no mic input. Any solutions?)

Camcorder
-Sony ax33 ~$750
-Panasonic vx 987 ~$850

DSLR

-Nikon D3300 ~$440 with 1 lens

-Canon T5i ~$550 with 1 lens

-t6i refurb $629 with 2 lens (http://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/eos-rebel-t6i-ef-s-18-55mm-is-stm-lens-kit-with-ef-s-55-250mm-f-4-56-is-stm-lens-refurbished?WT.mc_id=C126149)

Also, keep in mind this is my legit first camera.

Thanks!

for video you normally want a dslr with continuous autofocus. but at your budget and especially for your first camera you want to go cheap camera woth good lense. if you want to see some footage of the nikon d3300 with the kit 18-105mm lense check out my build log. but note it looks way better woth decent lenses.

at your budget just look for one that does 60fps. but choose wisely because once you bought into a brand you wont go out. your buying lenses and stuff and your not changing after that.

I would definitely go refurbished. Not from eBay though I would go straight from Canon.

If you get the Refurbed t6i from canon I would buy the -250mm lens from you :P

No you don't.  And definitely not AF.  AF in a camera is good enough for home videos and ENG work (sometimes), but it's better to work with MF.

So many things you need for this, and you'd want to spend 80% or more of your budget just on a single camera and lens?

Yea. It is always good to find videos and reviews mentioning cons and see if the cons would be a problem to you.

i would try to find one without lenses. because those lenses you have got there are nice for snapshots but if you want high quality you should look into something like a 35mm 1.8 or even 1.4

Why would you recommend the t6i over let's say a G7 mirrorless camera (i'm leaning towards this), or the Sony ax33 camcorder?

mirrorless cameras are too expensive for now. if you go apsc you will have enough money for a good lense and accessories. it doesn't really matter if you go canon or nikon. they are pretty similar.

The g7 comes with a $100 gift card effectively making the camera $500 brand new. It records 4k and 1080p 60fps. Heres the link: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1148282-REG/panasonic_dmc_g7kk_lumix_dmc_g7_mirrorless_micro.html

So is the t6i still better here? And what do you mean by apsc?

And what about a camcorder? http://www.adorama.com/SOFDRAX33B.html

I'd recommend the a6000, but if you could stretch your budget, the RX10 is the best option.

so aps-c is the formfactor of the sensor. on the higher end your normally get a full frame sensor. but they can share lenses if they are from the same brand.

the g7 you got there is actually a good deal and from that you could upgrade to the youtuber camera (gh4). but note that its way more expensive than the nikon or canon 1080p cameras. in the long run the lenses are the most expensive thing on a camera.

i personally would go with a nikon d3300 or the canon t6i and the sigma 30mm 1.4 art lense. note that there is a lot more cost to a camera. you need at least a filter, sd card, stand and additional batterys.

The d3300 is only $100 cheaper. Is that considered a lot or are you talking about the cost of Panasonic lens vs Nikon lens? I've seen that the g7 is better in video. So what gives the d3300 the edge over the g7?

Also, how much do filters cost?

sorry i can only know german prices and over here the d3300 is way cheaper than the g7.

note you have to find a camera without lense to properly compare the cost

Both cameras (at least in the USA) have to come with the lens included.

So based on the price difference right now, which is $100, would you recommend the g7 over the d3300?

anyways, what are the big advantages of the d3300 over the g7?

you can definetely buy them without lense. which lense do you buy with the d3300.

its got larger sensor per pixel which results into better quality. but the g7 has got higher resolution.

here's what i can do with the d3300:

Wow those photos are beautiful. What lens?

However, I've heard that the g7 has better video quality. Wouldn't you agree?

And does the d3300 have 1080p 60 FPS?

Could you upload test vids of the d3300?

Video is my main concern/use, that's why I'm leaning with the g7.
