Raspberry Pi 3 as a NAS?

Hello all!

I had a USB 3.0 HDD lying around, and I was going to buy a Pi 3 anyway, would it make an effective NAS? Just curious, that's all. Thanks!

it could be yeah. but you maybe limited with space for the harddrives

Yeah, should work teorically. What software are you going to use for it?

The PI only uses a 10/100 ethernet port and I can vaguely remember someone mentioning that they also share bandwidth with the USB... but I could be wrong. If you just want to do it as somewhere to store your files on the network and maybe share media files with a few people it might be OK. Was going to try it with my Pi2 that is now going spare, so am interested in this thread myself.

Yeah, we'll see. I might try it this weekend when I have access to the Pi again.

it does use the same hub, so throughput would be a downer...

I don't need super fast transfers, so it's not too big of a deal
