Beats me. That's not my rig, you see. I was using the picture as an example of the typical TJ08. Actual pictures of my rig can be found further down, and my CPU cooler is the Scythe Mugen 4.

Midgetboxing coming in hot with the Thread necro, I have a gigabyte 980 ti xtreme, and I'm not too impressed really. ASIC quality is an UN remarkable 68.5% and I can't get anywhere near 1500 MHz. It turbos to 1404 out of the box but 50mhz and above of that and its unstable asf. Needless to say I got fucked in the ass by the silicon lottery and I'm feeling quite annoyed seeing all these great reviews of this card achieving much higher clocks

Wow, beautiful card! I really like the looks of Gigabyte's recent designs. Great job on the overclocks as well, it seems that anything over 1,500Mhz is very good.

What are your temperatures and voltages at load?

 

Also, could you open GPU-Z and check whether you have Hynix or Samsung VRAM? In the UK, the 980 Ti Xtreme was out of stock everywhere for half a month, but it's back on sale now at a lower price. One person told me that he got a card with Hynix memory, unlike the early adopters, so I guess that's why Gigabyte doesn't advertise Samsung memory. It's kind of sucky for anyone waiting for a price drop that the new batch of cards doesn't come with Samsung memory.

Sounds like you got really shitty cooling or something because no one should hit sub 1480 max oc.

I got 68/70% asic cards running 1517/8000.

Hello guys! I want to upgrade my setup to a 980 TI and want some tips.
On the newegg canada website, the Gigabyte Xtreme Gaming is like 10$ less than the G1. I guess I should buy the Xtreme one since it seems more powerful?

Yes, given the price, you should go for the Xtreme. The G1 doesn't really have any advantages over it, except that it only needs 2 expansion slots. It's thinner and longer, whereas the Xtreme is thicker and shorter.

 

On an unrelated note, I have been experimenting with the third 6-pin PCIe connector. The vast majority of 980 Tis can be powered with only two PCIe connectors, and that is of course also the case with the Xtreme, but after connecting the third one to my PSU, the card has become stable at lower voltages (1.224 to be exact). My guess is that the card will not take full advantage of its 12+2 phase power delivery without the third PCIe connector plugged in.

 

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to increase the overclock beyond 1515MHz, but now I can do it at lower temperatures and lower fan speeds. In Anno 2070 and the FFXIV Heavensward benchmark, the maximum temperature was down to 75C, and the maximum fan speed down to 65%, or 2340RPM.

 

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the third PCIe connector needs to be activated by pressing the little button next to it (the button's colour will turn from blue to red to let you know that it's been switched on). This will also activate the LN2 BIOS, which I'm not a big fan of since it greatly increases the maximum allowed fan speed, making my custom fan curve much louder than necessary, so I had to flash it like described in the review, only this time lowering voltage to 1.224 from 1.230.

theres bioses that go way past 1.237v even for 970s. my 970 is volted at 1.275, some on water go up to 1.3125v. im betting you could easily push this card to 1600mhz given the proper voltage and bios. theres some modded bioses right here on tech tips just look around a bit

Definitely not, you can't just keep throwing voltage at big maxwell chips. They don't scale nearly as well as 970 and smaller chips do with volts.  

For instance, I can do 1540 @ stock volts on my card on water, 1550 will run at 1.25v from volt-meter, but no amount of extra voltage gets me to 1560.  The only thing that does get me to 1560, is colder temps.

 

The only real way to get a 1600 mhz 980 ti is either to get an EXTREMELY good high asic chip and keep it cold, or a really good ~75% asic card on water and have it be under 15c load.

Well my Amp Extreme is sitting at 1553mhz without a change in voltage and 230+mhz on the Vram while staying at 67C at max load

Hi to all,

I am reviving this old thread because I have the Gigabyte Xtreme for 2-3 days and while in stock clocks I get driver crash after playing Crysis 3 for an hour....

Unigine Heaven is stable for 3 hour as I ddidn't test it more. 

Have you tried playing Crysis 3 while overclocked? 

 

I wonder if I need to RMA the card or to just add some volts to the stock 1216 core

 

EDIT: To all you guys who have driver crashes with a Gtx 980 ti the prob is with your cpu overclock. Nvidia drivers seem to be very sensitive with the cpu overclock stability when a gtx 980 ti is loaded. I reverted my mobo and my 2600k (from 4,4ghz to 3,8ghz) to default and system is now super stable on crysis 3,  Metro 2033 and other games on 1440p all very high. Using cpu stress test my cpu looked to be OK and temp was no more than 52 C using Thermalright Archon cooler. 

I have to work around the cpu overclock little by little again.
