[Folding Rig Build Log] "Till Death Will it Fold"

iamdarkyoshi

I have an HD 6950 that was damaged and I managed to repair it... after it lost its value. So I want to fold with the GPU until it no longer works.

The rest of the system will be rather... old... because I do not have any other spare PCs.

post-128204-0-84503100-1448503629_thumb.

So here is the question. Do I modify the 475W Delta brand PSU to have the required power connectors, or do I bodge mount my spare kingwin 1KW modular PSU? The OEM delta PSU uses nippon chemi-con capacitors, and the kingwin uses shitty caps. I have done PSU mods before, I know what I am doing.

So I will post updates, but for now, tell me which PSU I should use. The kingwin seems like overkill, but the OEM supply will need some re-wiring.

Oh, and do not worry, there will be some Delta server fans involved :D

Update one: Any PSU is modular if you have a soldering iron!

I am just about to power it up into ubuntu on a flash drive. Hopefully no sparks and flames!

Update two: It freaking WORKS!!!

So first off, it helps to use the flash drive with ubuntu on it.

We got a GPU!

And we also have wifi!

I am not joking, this piece of wire works fine as a wifi antenna.

Update Three: I suck at anything other than windows.

I cannot get this machine to draw more than 100W from the wall. It IS folding, but after an hour, the GPU accomplished .1% and the CPU reached about 12%

I am thinking I might need to steal the HDD from my xbox 360. Unless it is IDE...

Right now, it is more of a vacuum cleaner than furnace.

Well the 1kw will be running very efficient, because you won't be using nearly it's full potential- so I'd say go with that one.

I will not even be using 50% of the stock PSU though...

How much will the 6950 be using while folding? Doesn't it bring it up to like 100%?

I might be throttling the GPU's speeds to lower its power draw a bit. The TDP of this card is 200W less than half of the PSUs rated output. The CPU will hardly be doing anything. I will mod the PSU because it looks super easy, and if it ends up not working, then I will use the kingwin probably.

Or you can do what Austin did and put the Delta and HP PSUs together xD

So when booting to ubuntu from a flash drive, it helps to use the flash drive with ubuntu on it.

That's always a good idea

The caps are all fine and happy. This is a buisiness class workstation, and the component quality reflects that. and the freaking bulletproof case that weighs more than a cooler master cosmos case.

I was going to say, those things can survive anything. It just looked like that cap was bad from the picture :P

There is even an solenoid header on the motherboard to physically lock the chassis with the admin password

Conveniently, there is also a USB port directly on the motherboard. For what? Well, for a flash drive with unbuntu!

Perfecto, ya I have only worked with the Dell workstations and HP Compaqs which are also both tanks, seeing all the gaming motherboards and other gaming based parts just makes me cry in terms of pure reliability.
