MS and AMD decreasing the CPU performance for users with older chipsets

It seems AMD and Microsoft are intentionally and discreetly decreasing the CPU performance of users that run AHCI on older AMD chipsets like the 700 series chipsets and their integrated S-ATA controlers.

 

AMD Chipset drivers (better to say AHCI drivers part of the chipset drivers) from 14.4 till today do that. Microsoft has also integrated a driver from that problematic range into their update package and that makes them install automatically if some older driver is detected.

 

The performance loss problem is easilly measured with Cinebench, 3DMark and can even be noticed when running Prime95 because the last CPU core tends to run a lot slower in it with the problematic driver.

 

The only way to get arround this problem is to manually revert the driver to the generic one (Standard Sata AHCI controller) from Windows from inside Device Manager, then restarting the PC and then manually installing an older AMD AHCI driver like the one from Catalyst Chipset drivers 13.12 from the same Device Manager. That restores the performance. Also, after that when installing newer chipset drivers be sure to deselect the AHCI driver.

 

A temporary fix can be disabling AHCI and running the drives in standard S-ATA IDE mode.
But why would you do that when it decreases the performance of your drives (SSD-s and HDD-s).

 

A single note, AMD knew about the driver problems in 14.4 (the first version driver was revoked and reuploaded as "fixed") but they continued supporting the old chipsets in the new drivers although they knew about the issue. My guess would be - they want the people to upgrade their boards.

 

Remember the old problem I noticed a few months back - today I decided to find a solution instead of using a workarround. This is the result.

The source is my own testing on multiple PC-s with the 760G, 770, 785 and 790 chipsets with the southbridges 750, 710 and 700.

Thank God I remember that and experimented with the older drivers. I was able to restore performance for more than a few people this way.

They want you to stop using DDR2, AM2 and AM2+ CPU-s and switch to their AM3+.

I know and according to jayztwocents no more non-apu cpu's are coming from amd in the foreseeable future. I was hoping that my next build could be AMD based. they have a better business model in my opinion

Test it for yourself. There is no different explaination (why they would still support the 700 series chipsets in the newer drivers KNOWING that they decrease performance and not just drop the support for the old chipsets).

It does if you put an FX on an board with a really old chipset (and there are some low end AM3+ boards out-there).

Imagine a FX 6300 on a for example Asus M5A78L-M LX Plus AM3+ board. The old drivers restore the performance when running AHCI on that system. One of the systems I got in order and normal performance as it should have.

that's fine and all, but since they aren't releasing any new CPUs For the am3+ platform it's not worth it to upgrade the motherboard. It's honestly better using the money towards switching to intel.

I actually do, but I decided to buy the 990 at the time, so I am personally good. My point was that since they decided to not continue the fx line up, and unless you only recently purchased a fx processor, then you are likely heading towards an upgrade cycle and the money used on the motherboard could be used towards that upgrade. Obviously if you are holding on to the chip for the long-er haul then yes upgrading the motherboard would be prudent.
