New HDMI 2.0 Details!!

Evan Owen

HDMI is set to be released soon with a generous amount of new and improved features.

HDMI is being revised again to help push display technology forward even further, but what does it improve on? Most of us should know that the last iteration of HDMI could support 4K resolutions but at the cost of your refresh rate. The last version of HDMI could only output at 30Hz  (30 FPS), but with the new version it can now out put at 60Hz (60 FPS). Not only that though, the new version also bumps up the color from 8 bit to up to 12 bit. Rumor has it as well that part of the move to HDMI 2.0 includes an upgrade to H.265 (HEVC) to aid in handling minimal loss of quality while stream at such high bandwidths like 4K at 60Hz at 10 bit color. With the new generation of consoles coming out soon and the increasing popularity in 4K displays you would think it a perfect time to come out with a new cable for them. Although for anyone looking to upgrade ASAP to HDMI 2.0 first know that the last version of HDMI is still relevant for 1080p video and games and the cable is more focused on 4K video.

HDMI has always been able to output 60Hz since version 1.0, the maximum resolution was 1920x1200p60 and version 1.3 could output 75Hz at 2560x1600p75.  It's only with the new version that you will be able to display 4K resolution at 60Hz though.

HDMI has had 'Deep Colour' since version 1.3 which is 10, 12 and 16-bit colour.

I'm not completely sure if this is true, it's just what I've read over various sites.

He's talking in reference to 4K. If 4K wasn't a thing there wouldn't be a need to upgrade the standard.

Thanks for clearing that up.  The current version can only support 24Hz at 4k .

Isn't Displayport still considered superior? I haven't checked but I think HDMI 2.0 may have less bandwidth than displayport still.

why is everyone so concerned about bandwidth if it can support the target resolution and framerates?

Because we aim higher than the current standards. I want 4K @ 120hz now.

Yes DisplayPort is still better than HDMI 2.0 and the DisplayPort version 1.2 has been out for years.

The bandwidth of DisplayPort 1.2 is 17.28 Gbit/s and HDMI 2.0 is 14.4Gbit/s.

Thanks. With this information why is HDMI or the developers of HDMI still trying?

The only reason I can think of is to still support displays without DisplayPorts, but then why don't all displays have DisplayPorts on them if it's better than HDMI?
