1080P - 1440P - 4K - 8K Why the change?

If you increase the vertical scale, the horizontal does too. "2160" is there just for the sake of convenience. 3840x2160 is the actual number ;)

EDIT: 1080p is 1920x1080. Now let's compare this: 3840 is 2x 1920. 2160 is 2x 1080. 2 by 2 equals 4. if the dimensions were 4 times greater, you'd have 16(!) times the pixels. Do you understand?

Ok buy this scale it looks like it's 4x the amount but if you go by the number it's only doubled the amount of pixels. They should have just called it 2160P or called 1080P 2K. but by numbers it's only 2x NOT 4x.

Maybe we should ignore the fact that we're talking about pixels.

How about this...

First, we have a tract of land of, say, 2 miles by 3 miles. That makes 6 square miles, correct?

However, if we take a tract of land with outer dimensions that are twice as great as those of the first one, 4 by 6 miles, making it 24 square miles of surface area.

 

Similar is true for the amount of pixels in a display. 

While the outer dimensions of 4K may be twice as great as those of there is FOUR times the amount of pixels. 

And the term 4K comes from that overall amount of pixels, not the outer dimensions. I believe this may be the source of confusion, correct? In the world of displays, the verall amount of pixels is what matters. That is why we use the term 4K, not 2K. 

I hope this makes it clear somewhat.

Oh look this TV is 1080 :0! Whoaaaaaaaa cool.

Hmm wait this TV is 1440p, or like 300 difference I cant maths, probably not worth the extra cost.

What's this! This can many r tells me this TV are 4k! 4 times 1080! That r really big number. I r buy really cool TV now!

It's all because the simple consumer can multiply big numbers together or remember them.

1366x768 = 720p

1600x900 = 900p

1920x1080 = 1080p

2560x1440 = 1440p

3840x2160 = 2160p (4K)

 

 

I thought 1280x720 was 720p?

please get out a calculator, your another one that can't add 1080+1080 witch comes out to the 2160. It's 2x the amount not 4x.

 

It's 2x vertically and horizontally, 2x + 2x = 4x. When people say '4x the pixels', they are accounting for the entire screen - not just one axis of it.

 

I agree with the op point though, the change is pretty confusing to most. Especially when you consider the numbers aren't actually 4000 or 8000, whereas 720p / 1080p / 1440p etc. represented their actual figures.

You are so certain of yourself and you couldn't be more wrong.  You have been providing a great demonstration of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

 

Anyway, for 1080p, there are 1920x1080 = 2,073,600 pixels (multiply 1920 by 1080)

For 2160p (4K) there are 3840x2160 = 8,294,400 pixels (multiply 3840 by 2160)

 

8,294,400 / 2,073,600 = 4

 

2160p (4K) has 4 times as many pixels as 1080p.

 

This is a common mistake people make when dealing with multiple dimensions.  If you double the lengths of each side of a rectangle, you quadruple (2^2) the area.  If you double the lengths of each side of a cube, you octuple (8 or 2^3) the volume.  If you're dealing with 4 dimensional space, it's 16 (2^4), and so on for each dimension you add.

It is NOT 4x the amount of pixels and this is why I brought this up cause most of you think that it's 4x the pixels when its only 2x the pixels, That is were the confusion came in.

 

I don't think anyone is reading my original topic or adding up the numbers. I knew people were confused by this as at first I was. 4K is only 2x 1080P Nuff Said. I was wondering why they changed it from a vertical scale to a horizontal scale.

You clearly don't understand how 2-dimensional space works.

4k IS 4x the amout of pixels as 1080p

1080p is defined as being 1920 pixels by 1080 pixels for a total pixel count of 2,073,600 pixels.

4k is defined as being 3840 pixels by 2160 pixels for a total pixel count of 8,294,400 pixels.

 

8,294,400 / 2,073,600 = 4

In a 2 dimensional space when you double the amount of both axes you effectively quadruple the surface area, which is what is going on here. You are doubling twice, once by height and once by width. And 2x2=4. Don't believe me, go grab a piece of paper and cut out a 4 inch square. Then cut out a couple 2 inch squares and see how many you can fit in there (hint, it will be 4). This is basic middle school geometry, nothing fancy going on here.

As far as why it is being called 4k, its a hold over from the video editing industry, 4k cameras have been around for a long time, and somewhere along the line it just got that name adopted and its stuck with it.

a 1920x1080 resolution has 2,073,600 pixels. 3840x2160 4k  resolution has 8,294,400 pixels. Divide that number by 4 and what do you get? Do you still want to argue that it is not 4x the pixels of 1080p?

Dude... 8294400 is 4x more than 2073600.....

3840x2160 is UHDtv

 

4096x2160 is DCI 4k

 

3840 is the one that is 4 times 1080 perfectly, which is why it is being pushed as the standard for tv, and 4096 is being pushed as full 4k to be used in cameras and theaters. I think at this point it would be a step backwards for promotion to call UHDtv as 2160p, because people will see it as a smaller number and they will ask for 4k. It seems stupid to me to have 2 different standards with the same name (both referred to as just 4k), especially if it means more black bars when watching movies.

You forgot 5k and we go by "p" on 16:9 monitors due to home theater finally having something comparable to a pc monitor

4k called that because it sounds better when compared to 1080p. And it's the width not the height. The proper name is UHD for the resolution that is on consumer devices.

I see what our saying and that makes sense. But when it comes to the numbers it looks like they only double it from 1080 or 2K.

 

Well if you consider 720P by the new standard it would probably be 1.3K and 1080 would be 2K and 1440P would be 2.6K, just round it up like they did with 4K.

I'm just trying to understand a misconception of a new standard they are using now.

 

The way they put it on paper makes it confusing where they doubled the number and called it 4K. If 1080 was called 2K all this time then 4K would make a lot more sense to some people (including me).
