3080 and 550W PSU

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone tried a 3080 on a (good) 550W PSU?

I know that the recommendation is more >=650W but could you get away with less with a less power hungry CPU than used in most reviews (10900k/3900X/3950X..)?

I have a R5 3600 + 16GB DDR4 + 2SSD + 1HDD + 5 fans and a RM550x v2 that could run this config with a 2080 OC on a ~300W power limit with no issues

So, in the one in a million chance that I score a 3080 before I sell my 550W (basically zero interest from people..), I was thinking why not use it?

I'd be running it at pretty close to max capacity so it wouldn't be a long term solution anyway but I'd be very interested to see if someone tried something similar with a sub 600W PSU.

Thanks.

Assuming you dont put it under full combined load with a 10900k, it should work fine.

At worst i can see it shut down due to transiense, but it will most likely be fine.

3080 has worse transiense than vega 64.

I dont really see an issue running an rm550x + a moderate CPU and a 3080 for a prolonged period of time.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

150W for cpu, 50W for rest of system, 350W for gpu. that's 550W total, under combined cpu and gpu stress test. under normal gaming conditions it will be less.

150W for CPU seems way too much

I haven't seen it go above 95W and that's in OCCT with PBO enabled.

Right now I have a GT710 (I know..) and the absolute max system power consumption from the wall I've seen while running the OCCT power stress test is 164.4W

sure, that's even better then

Give it a shot.

Yeah I think I will.

And let's say it works just fine, could I consider sticking with my PSU or should I still look to replace it?

Likely not the best idea to pair it with a 550W PSU, even a good one like the RMX 550W.

The output wattage is on the low side for your system with the RTX 3080.

The RMX 550W only has one PCIe cable with 2 connectors.... Not a good thing with GPUS that can pull 350W or more, and they do pull more...

As a stop gap you might be OK until you can get in a 750W PSU, maybe..... If it shuts down or crashes just pull the card until you get a new PSU.

But you do need a new PSU either way.

Well I was planning to get a new one anyway but still I'm kinda curious to know if using a RM550x with a 3080, if it appears to work fine, could even be a possibility long term

(for someone who'd play around 1-2 hours a day on average)
