there is a weird port next to a lock sign on my laptop and I have no idea what it's for. i'm really curious. what is it?

That's the Kensington Lock. Essentially to tether your laptop to something in order to prevent it from being stolen.

I've only seen it used in office environments where laptops are kept on the desk pretty much all the time. The idea is that if you want to steal the laptop, you would have to either take the desk it's attached to as well or cut the cable. To which you'll look very suspicious walking around with a laptop that has a severed lock attached to it.
