RTX 2080 SUPER display outputs

Running an Aorus RTX 2080 SUPER now and was looking to get a 5th monitor for my setup. I already ordered a monitor wall mount from china (i can get it almost half price at taobao compared to local sellers) and bought myself a USB-C to DP cable since I'm already using all 3x DP out and 1x HDMI out from my GPU driving 4x LG 27UL500W 4K60Hz monitors.

 

Well the cable arrived today, and when i plugged it into my GPU and one of my monitors with a free DP Port. I realised it was being picked up by windows but in Display Settings was set as "Disconnect this display" when i set it to "Extend desktop to display" it just caused my other monitors to freak out and I'm assuming it basically just doesn't want to work. I then thought it was maybe a resolution thing. So I plugged the USB-C to DP into the LG 4k and used the HDMI cable to plug into my 1080p TV. The TV then was automatically set as "Disconnect this display" and the same thing happens when i set it to "Extend desktop to display". Thank god I discovered this soon as I as probably gonna pick up a Dell P2419H this weekend.

What confuses me is the Aorus product page.

 

What on earth does 5 display outputs and 4 different views mean.

 

And if I do decide to still get a 5th monitor, what are my options for driving it with the PC.

correct me if im wrong. but turing cards can only drive 4 displays iirc.

It means you have 5 (or 7) different connectors but only 4 of them will provide distinct image output at the same time.

 

So the Aourus gives you more possible combinations how to connect multiple displays, but you can't have more than four.

 

(Edit: I think you can have more in clone mode, which is why they say 4 different views)

The specs are a little confusing, but you can only drive four displays with this card. The ports are just options, and specifically, the USB-C is there if you want to use it in lieu of one of the other ports, not in addition to all the other ports. If you want to drive more displays, you're going to need another card, or if you have to have a chip with an iGPU, then, you could drive the fifth monitor off that.

My heart feels like its been cheated by the product page but ok  

 

Alright understood basically I can only run 4 monitors off the GPU, how would I run a 5th monitor though. I tried plugging a monitor into my motherboard's HDMI port (9900k with an iGPU) but I don't get a display out. Do I have to enable it somewhere in the bios to get a display out? And if I switch to a CPU one day without an iGPU (planning a ryzen switch for early next year) Is my options then basically limited to maybe getting a 1650 super as just a display card? (IIRC i read some posts about drivers not enjoying a mix of architectures)

But that would mean I have to get a monitor which supports daisy-chaining? None of my LG monitor currently have DP MST. the 5th monitor I'm looking at will be a 1080p one though and I'm not sure if I wanna shell out an extra $120 over the Dell P2419H for the Dell U2419H which supports MST. Not sure how it will play with the second monitor being 4k and the first being 1080p too.

Ok so the board does have an i-gpu phase. Then you can enable the i-gpu in the bios though I'm not familiar with gigabyte's bios so I'm not sure where that is.

Just tried it, yes i get a display out but once i pull a spotify window over to the output being driven by th iGPU, iGPU spikes from 0 to 57% usage and my GPU spikes from 30% (wallpaper engine) to 52% usage, with the whole system becoming close to a slideshow. is that likely due to a setting?

well the i-gpu spike is normal.

this isn't at least afaik,  it could be because the picture is being rendered by a different source. 

you could try two monitors (one plugged to the gpu and one to the i-gpu) and check.

I just did a test, all is ok when i launch a game. I tried launching American Truck Simulator and Ride 3, both relatively intense games at high settings and both ran smoothly with a youtube video still playing on another display.

 

But once I launch Wallpaper Engine, everything becomes choppy and according to Task Manager its due to Desktop Window Manager using about 50% of my GPU. I already manually switched over WallpaperEngine32 and 64 to use my RTX 2080S in the nvidia control panel.

I'm going to assume when you disable wallpaper engine, the choppiness goes away..

well i personally do not have experience with it, but afaik wallpaper engine can be recourse intensive.

yeah wallpaper engine can be intensive but never to the point of choppiness. once i pause or quit wallpaper engine the choppiness is totally gone. so now i'm really kinda at a loss

you could try disabling the i-gpu and run the 4 displays and check if the choppiness goes away with wallpaper engine, if it does, it could be messy drivers, since well intel i-gpu drivers and nvidia ones could cause problems.

the 4 displays without the i-gpu enabled have always been working. Been running them like that for a couple months already.

yea then it's very possible that it could be the drivers, assuming you run the game on one monitor, this would be weird. 

if you're running the game on all 4/5 monitors, last ditch effort, you could try running it on one and check, other than that, i'm kind of out of ideas lol.

of course im only running the games on 1 monitor connected to my RTX 2080S. What messy drivers would be a good bet for the culprit though

yea they can be messy in some cases, other than that i'm out of ideas in all honesty.

Don't think drivers have anything to do with it (you can use the intel utility to update the iGPU https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28425/Intel-Driver-Support-Assistant) but that wallpaper engine probably gets rendered on the card it's displayed from, and the load that is negligible on the 2080S is significant on the iGPU that's probably 20x less powerful...

Usually with all 4 Wallpapers going I was getting about 19-20% GPU Usage on the 2080S. With the 5th monitor plugged in through the iGPU with the same 4 wallpapers going (no wallpaper on the 5th monitor plugged in through the iGPU yet) my iGPU usage soars to 50% doing nothing and my 2080S soars to about 70% usage with about 50% of it used by Desktop Window Manager. Wallpaper engine was already set in both NVIDIA control panel and windows display settings to use the 2080S instead of the iGPU.

 

with that the whole system turns very choppy and is borderline slideshow level.

oh no.. that's just depressing now  its the decision whether i want my 5th monitor and lose my wallpapers or give up on the 5th monitor. Was just gonna use the 5th monitor to keep my whatsapp/discord/spotify open anyways. Guess I have to continue with alt-tabbing once in awhile to check them.
