Is it possible to install linux on external?

So I’m not talking about booting from an external but I’m wondering if it is possible to install a linux on a 500GB external drive, this would be usefull since I work with different pc’s and I would have it easier to have the applications I use set up and right settings

You could probably boot linux off an abacus if you wanted to. It should work fine.

What is abacus? (I sound dumb ik)

depends on the installer, just pick the external drive as the drive you want to install on

Its not garanteed to work on all systems though, I have tried this, and sometimes its less happy on some systems than others.

Install the Linux iso of your choice.

Download Rufus.

Plug in your external HDD.

Flash the Linux iso onto the HDD

Reboot your computer (using your external HDD as the bootup drive.) If there is an option to try the OS, select that.

Just google it, it's just an old mathematical tool the Chinese invented to count and calculate stuff.

Does it automatically boot into windows?

Try advanced shutdown/reboot and select your usb HDD.

Maybe try flashing the ISO on a USB disk then boot from it. You should be able to install Linux on the external drive. The process is the same as installing it on an internal drive, you just choose the external.
