Suggestions for backing up macbook to FreeNas [SOLVED]

Go to solution Solved by shoutingsteve,

I found an opensource program to do what I want:

SmartBackup (one word)

https://solesignal.com/smartbackup4/

My husband has an macbook and we would like to do an incremental backup automatically every few days to our Freenas server on the network.  I tried a few programs, but most were paid (as much software for mac is) or didn't do automatic backups.  Any suggested free programs?

Thanks everyone.

Also, we already tried time machine, but it doesn't' see the FreeNas share as an option.

It must be true, I read it on the internet...

you need to configure the freenas box to use time machine, there are special paramters to be able to use it for time machine.

did you try a guide like this? https://www.ixsystems.com/community/threads/initial-experimental-support-for-time-machine-over-smb.70604/

I followed this, and the drive DOES appear as an option in timemachine, but will not allow me to log into the server to backup to it (I even created a new user just for this purpose), despite showing up as a networked drive in finder.
