60c IDLE with Corsair H100i AIO and 3700x

Hey everyone, I recently finished a new build with a 3700x, but it's idle temps are extremely high. I have yet to put it under load as I don't want to damage the CPU.

I have a Corsair H100i Platinum SE, with the radiator front mounted and the radiator fans as an intake. I loaded up ICUE and the temperature of the AIO is 30 C - both the fans are running at around 700-800 RPM and the pump is running at about 2300 RPM.

However, even though the AIO is at 30 C, the CPU is at 50-60, while only under ~5% load. I don't think it's a connection issue with between the CPU and the cooler, as I took it off and then reattached the cooler, tightening the screws all the way. When I took the cooler off the CPU, the thermal compound (that came with the cooler) was applied on the CPU, but looked pretty thin.

I tried setting windows to power saving and got it down to 40C, but I don't really want to throttle my CPU like that. I checked my vcore, and it says that my vcore is 1.45 volts. Is this bad? And if so, how would I change it? (I have an ASrock b450m Steel Legend)

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Test your temps under load. Just cancel any stress test if you hit the max temperature. Idle temps don't necessarily tell us much.

 

Ignore the voltages on Ryzen under low load. They peak like that in low core/threadcount workloads to give you max performance. Completely normal and safe.

 

If I had to put money on an issue it's likely a bad mount.

Keep in mind if you take the cooler off you need to clean off the thermal paste and reapply.

Okay, so I used intelburn's standard and high stress tests and it didn't rise above 80 C. I also ran a stress test at 50% below standard to simulate "medium" load (not sure if this is a viable methodology, though?) , and it barely seemed to change the temperature at all, it just hovered around 60. I'll go out and buy thermal paste tomorrow (I didn't pick any up when I bought the cooler as I was planning on just keeping the preapplied) and remount it, I'll update when I do that.

I don't know anything about that stress test. Most people just use P95/AIDA64, or something like Cinebench R20. 80C under full load is perfectly acceptable for that. I wouldn't touch it. Preapplied paste is usually fine.

 

I used ML240R's pre applied, and thought I had a bad mount (I didn't), and when I remounted I used MX-4, and saw like zero change. Swapping to Grizzly you might see like 2C change. Not worth it IMO.

So I used Cinebench, and same results - nothing over 80, and staying 60-70. Even under full load, it seems to just raise 10-20 degrees. 

I reinstalled the cooler, applied new thermal paste after cleaning the old off, and nothing changed. I also took the radiator off the case and wiggled it around in case there was an air bubble, and still nothing changed.

I found I could set my maximum power for my cpu to 90% in Windows Power Settings and I'd get it down to about 40C idle, but I don't really want to lose the clock speed of my CPU for that. Right now, I'm still essentially stuck where I've been, with idling in the 60s and 50s. 

I think I'm going to try installing the Wraith Prism and seeing what happens with stock cooler, and I'll update here once I do that.

Sorry to ping you again, but actually, should I just not mess with anything at all? I may be misunderstanding what you said with "don't touch it", but you're saying that as long as the CPU never goes above 80C then it should be okay, even if it's idling pretty high?

Idle temps aren't really that important. Unless they're over like 45C something's weird.

 

Other than that I would leave all your settings completely stock on the CPU, and enable XMP.

If your 3700X is running at stock, and it is setting (or requesting) for 1.45V for the Core Voltage, that is high.

That is probably why your CPU is running rather warm -- both idle and under load -- with an AIO like the H100i.

You can run at 3700X on stock with under 1.3V...

Did you turn on some 'Auto' overclocking feature in the motherboard BIOS?

There is an AutoOC and yes it is on. No it didn't change my idle temp. I have a 3800x, and my temps are fine.

 

 

My 3800x can run at stock speeds with 1.2V, and it doesn't break 58C.

 

The thing is, by limiting to 1.3V, you lose performance. Ryzen is designed to use high voltages in low core/threadcount workloads, and it allows it to boost single cores higher and you get more performance. It's totally normal for Ryzen to spike voltages, and it shouldn't really increase your heat that much because it applied that voltage to such a small portion of your CPU, and whenever you actually load your CPU, your voltage drops considerably.

Did some tweaking in Ryzen Master and managed to get the temps down to 40-50C when idle by lowering voltage to 1.25 V, while clocking at 4.2ghz.

Still, though, going to mess with the cooling as I'd ideally like to get down to 30C.

What is your ambient temperature (e.g. room temperature)?

You won't get under 30*C if your ambient is...~22*C+

 

What is the fan setting for the fans attached to your AIO?

Are they on silent mode, etc?

 

Another thought, what computer case / chassis are you using?

If the airflow is not great (e.g. solid tempered glass at the front), that will affect overall temperatures, too.

 

Just curious, I don't think it affects Ryzen 3000-series much but, do you have the Ryzen optimized power plan selected in Control Panel?

I am aware there is a Turbo Boost feature, and the different P-Sates on Ryzen CPUs -- I'm not talking about that.

Rather, enabling some quick-and-dirty overclock profile pre-programmed into the motherboard by the motherboard manufacturer.
