2560x1440 with 144hz not available. Graphics card or monitor?

I just bought a new monitor: AOC Q27G2U/BK. It is a 2560*1440 resolution and has max. 144hz. When I went into the setting menu from the screen. It said I can only do 1980*1080 with 144hz. And NOT 2560*1440 with 144hz. Is this the monitor or is this to do with my graphics card: radeon r9 280 (old). I just wanted to upgrade my graphics card, but I want to know if this makes it able to run 2560*1440 with 144hz. If anyone knows if upgrading my card has an effect on running 2560*1440 with 144p available, please let me know.
