Is now a good time to buy Navi or RTX cards when new architectures are around the corner?

Overall I think I built a very well decked out gaming system excepted for the repurposed old Maxwell Titan X and 75Hz Display. I'm contemplating upgrading to new, not used, GPU and was kinda leaning towards AMD RX 5700 XT to put my Freesync display to good use,  but I've always been on the green team before because I've watched videos and read on forums that AMD has serious issues when it comes to the stability of their drivers.

 

I want to game on high to ultra settings on 1440p minimum 60 fps, but higher fps is always welcome.  Not gonna get a 144 Hz display since I don't play competitively,  and I'm used to my ultra-wide IPS display. I can still play on 1080p on AAA games at high settings, but I can feel the age of this Titan X is passing by.

 

So long story short I want to upgrade but I don't know if right now is a good time to buy a new GPU. I mean I heard new Ampere and Big Navi RDNA2 will be announced soon, roughly March? I don't wanna buy now and come summer in 4 months new graphics card will be out on the shelf and I'll regret buying older gen since I was gonna upgrade anyway.  And I doubt even more that this current gen of GPUs will get any significant price drop for me to not having buyer remorse. I'm even contemplating buying and returning a new GPU every month until the gen comes out, but it's kinda a dick move.

 

So what's you guys' opinion? Should I buy now or chug along for a few more months?

If you're happy with the performance your TItan is offering, hold off until the new cards are out.

But remember, there is never a good time to upgrade, since something is always "coming out soon", so upgrade when you feel like you need new parts.

A Titan X Maxwell is good for 3440 X 1440 60hz and 1440p 75hz. So unless you go 4k or 3840 X 1600 you don't need more at the moment. You should wait for next gen.

 

There are no good upgrades for you from AMD right now. If your Titan died today it would be a good replacement. Like with Nvidia you have to wait.

The driver issues according to "Tech Deals" seems to be at 1080p in some titles. I have not seen them at higher resolutions.

 

Freesync seems to work well with Nvidia cards. At first it did not for me but now it just works.

 

I play at 4k 60hz and 3840 X 1600 75hz ultrawide and use 2080 tis. They would be a good upgrade for you if you could get a deal but without a deal it is best to wait.

I dont know exact timeline on big Navi, but that would be the time to buy IMO.   If recent trends continue, NVIDIA wont budge on price until some competition is offered (see 2080S and 2080ti).  Big Navi might finally be the stimulus to get them to drop prices.  Maybe next gen will actually be more affordable too.

 

Probably wouldnt roll the dice on big Navi myself, just looking forward to the price drop at the halo end of the spectrum

I'm not really into the current ray tracing craze atm but thought I could wait since it's rumored that big Navi will also do ray tracing, and current RTX cards are just really first gen tech demo so maybe I should wait till it's more matured in the new architecture. And yeah nvidia is just high way robbing right now.

So I tested Anthem on full screen at high setting 1440p and the fps hovers at between 31 fps to 40 fps.
