Odd issue with a laptop MXM GPU

The GPU in question is an AMD FirePro 5950M, it's in an Elitebook 8760W.

Anyway, i have 2 of these laptops, one with the firepro, other with the Quadro 3000M. The Quadro one is having GPU issues, takes a few times to boot (GPU was already reflowed on a reflow station). So i found the Firepro laptop which was selling for cheap, seller told me the issue and whatnot and i thought it's just a bad screen or bad cable for the screen.

Took it and checked, the firepro laptop got output in an external monitor, awesome i thought. Opened up both laptops and replaced the GPUs and coolers. Tried to power my laptop with the new firepro GPU in it but...nothing. It powered on, the display blinked tho very dimly, same as when it was in the laptop it came with, and no picture, but gave it on the external monitor.

Now, i always thought that the display switching was done on the motherboard itself, not the GPU, so my question is, what the hell could the issue then be if anyone has a clue?
