Help, says “Restart and Select Proper Boot Device”

Alexg5095

Hi, I recently finished building a PC two days ago and it worked fine for first day. However, today I tried turning it on but it tells me to “Restart and Select Proper Boot Device.” I’ve disconnected and reconnected the cabled to and from my motherboard, hard drive, and PSU. I’m not sure what it could be. The motherboard recognizes the hard drive, but I can’t boot to it. I’ve tried connected the SATA cable in different slots on the motherboard but, again, it just recognizes it but can’t boot to it. Please help, I don’t know what to do anymore. These are my specs:

Motherboard: Gigabyte f2a68hm-h

CPU: AMD Athlon x4 860k

GPU: GTX 960

RAM: not sure which specific but 16 GB of DDR3

Storage: 1 TB western digital hard drive

PSU: SeaSonic M12II 520 Bronze EVO

did you cahnge the uefi to legacy mode on bios settings? it can rearly brick the system.

try to boot from dlc boot tool and load windows live, check to see if everything set correctrly on your drive.

I believe it was set on that when I was going through the bios. If it is, what do I change that to? And how do I access the dlc boot tool?

try changing it to uefi tell me if it make any diffrnce.

http://dlcboot.com/download.html

you can download dlc boot from here

if you cant get the hang of it just get you windows installation disk/tumb drive and reach the stage where you can choose your disk, and check to see if it is ntfs formated with mbr,if you are booting from dlc tool i would reccomend the mini tool partition wizard and check disk tool.

but i think you are better off just re installing windows

So i’ve tried installing Windows, but it just takes a million years on Windows Setup and i get the little hour glass icon which stays like that for i don’t know how long. When it eventually works, it says I can’t use any of the drives or partitions. What do I do?

did you deleted your partition and created a new one on the disk choosing screen?

also how old is your hard drive?

did you manage to create dlc boot thumb drive? if so boot to the dlc boot and check the health status of your disk, also run a disk mark test to see if you get decent writing and reading speed.

I tried deleting and reformatting the drives and it wouldn’t let me do either, I got errors for them. It said it can’t boot from GPT or something like that. Another partition said it needs to be NTFS or something like that. Add to that it would take like 40 minutes to load and show the hourglass icon for me to just get the error message. The hard drive is new, I bought it on Monday. I believe this is it:

https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16822236339

I haven’t done the dlc boot thumb drive yet but I’m going to try it now. Also, I checked the bios and everything is set to either UEFI or UEFI first. Sometimes I get an error saying BlinitializeLibrary failed 0xc00000bb error. I’m really desperate at this point for any solution

are you deleting all of the partition on your wd drive than select the drive for installation?

So I went into the minipartition wizard and the hard drive shows up as basic MBR. The hard drive is divided into two, with the left being a small sliver saying “basic MBR” and the right just saying it has 935 GB. What do I do from here?

edit: In the acronis disk director, it says my “Recovery” volume is a NTFS and is healthy, “EFI System partition is FAT32 and is healthy, “Local Volume” is NTFS and is also healthy. what do I try now?

edit 2: I rebuilt the MBR, wiped the drive, and cleared all partitions from the partition wizard then tried reinstalling Windows. Was able to delete the partition and reformat but said I couldn’t install Windows because I needed to enable the drive controller. I went into the bios and changed it from IDE to AHCI and it let me continue. It’s currently on 10% so hoping this works

It was able to install but was extremely slow and delayed. Would take minutes to open upna program and be extremely delayed when opening the menu when I would click the windows key. I tried doing a fresh install again and it said it needed to be GPT so I changed it to GPT. Now, it tells me that I need to turn on the device controller (but it’s already on AHCI) and sometimes I get an “error 0x80300002.” I did notice that when clicking the “New” option on the unallocated disk pace it doesn't create a partition or anything, and it doesn’t let me install it again onto the disk.

Nope, and I’m not sure if I could return it due to the fact that I threw the packaging away on the first day since it seemed to work since it let me install Windows. Didn’t expect for it to do not work on second boot. I’m gonna call and see if I can

you have 2 years of limited warranty so try to take use of that.

also where did you get your windows iso?

if you have another computer laying around unused re install windows on that machine, after installation is done run sysprep shutdown the system and make a complete backup using acronoius true image on the dlc boot, than go and restore the backup to the problematic pc.

also check on diskmark(dlc boot) how much speed are you getting on the disk

I just called Best Buy and they said I could return it or do an exchange for another one so I’ll let you know how it goes when I get the new one and install Windows on it. I believe it’s the hard drive that might be the issue; today I turned it on and it said it has 0 gb used and 0 gb free, and after a couple of reboots the bios no longer recognizes there’s a hard drive. So wish me luck lol

gl brother keep us updated.

also if you can get your money back why not upgrade to an ssd?

I’m on a bit of a budget right now and I don’t wanna spend the money on both a hard drive and ssd. I don’t really mind the speed of hard drives to be honest. I’ll for sure be getting a ssd down the line though. I’ll let you know how it goes after I go to Best Buy

So I got a new hard drive already. Says can’t install cause it’s mbr. When i try to convert from command prompt it gives me an error and it doesnt see that the drive is there. What could be causing the computer to not recognize that there is a hard drive?
