Any benefits to having a push pull config on an air cooler?

David_Kwan

Hi guys,

So I'm thinking of getting an air cooler for my R5 2600 later, currently using the stock cooler. I was wondering if I should change my airflow after I get one.

The case is the NZXT H500.

So my air cooling right now are 2x140mm front intakes https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KF7O58G/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s04?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And the top and rear exhaust are using the case fans that came with the case.

What I'm thinking of doing later (Once I decide on which fans to get) is take out both exhaust, and have a single rear exhaust. Then there's the push pull config air cooler.

That way there's like a nice straight path for the air to flow through.

Anyone have a similar setup to what I just explained? Is it better this way?

And does the top exhaust even exhaust any hot air? The reason I ask this is that when I have a game running, only the rear exhaust had warm air coming out, while the top didn't feel warm at all.

It feels to me like the top exhaust is just taking away the cool air from the front intake.

Any help and advice is appreciated thanks!

And I'm thinking of replacing the exhaust fans with RGB ones. Currently looking at the Corsair LL120s.

Its minimal, usually between 3-5c at most.. in general its not really worth it.

It sounds like the rear fan is good enough with your setup or you could try lowering the RPM for the top fan before removing it.

If you are overclocking then a cooler with push/pull or 2 tower/2 fan setup would be more ideal if you are trying to keep things cooler and quieter. But I would wait for the new coolers that support Ryzen 3000 and AM4 are available if you are going to change the cooler.

AFAIK

2 fans gives you sqrt(2) airflow (141% airflow), thus allowing you to run your fans at 70% of the speed and have the same airflow, and 2 fans at 700rpm is quieter than 1 fan at 1000rpm. performance-wise, minimal esp. as you get higher and higher airflow.

sometimes top exhausts can actually increase temps, instead of air going to the cooler, air goes to the top exhaust.

What CPU coolers are you considering?

Here are my reccs:

sub-20$. Stick with stock

20-35$ Cryorig M9a or M9 Plus

35-50$ Scythe Mugen 5 (cools as well as a U14s)

50-75$ Scythe Ninga 5 (fkin HUGE)

75-100$ Noctua D15s/be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4

100-150$ Corsair H115i Pro

What you currently have is fine. Removing the top fan probably wouldn't help but it doesn't hurt to try.

What cooler did you have in mind? Push / pull can help but it might not be worth the extra money.

LL's are good if you're into their lighting options. There are otherwise cheaper rgb fans or better non-led fans in general.

Thanks, yeah I plan to overclock the 2600 a bit and if I can get it as quiet as I can it'll be a plus for me. @alyen I never thought about that. As I don't have any immediate need for a new cooler I can wait for 3rd gen Ryzen to come out and see if there's better coolers that come out then.

Yeah that's what I thought was happening. I'll try lowering the speed of the top exhaust or unplugging the fan and test the temps out.

@Firewrath9 @WoodenMarker I was looking at the Hyper 212 Black Edition as it was around $30 and it seemed the performance was pretty good at that price. Plus it'll look great in my white H500 case.

Yeah, the Hyper 212 BE is pretty good.

I never thought about having it as intake tbh. I'll try that out too. Though I'll need to get some kind of magnetic filter for it if I decide to leave it as intake.

I'd actually reccommend the Cryorig M9 Plus, its usually sub-30$, and peforms within 1c of the hyper 212 evo, and 1dba quieter

I tried looking it up on Amazon but it doesn't ship to Fiji. Is it this cooler you're recommending?
