I have a laptop that does not have a vga port. Is it possible to get image quality above 1080p? I've heard that hdmi can also lead to washed out images. Just want to make sure that any monitor I buy isn't limited and I don't waste any money

VGA is the worst of all video port standards. You wont have any issues over HDMI. Get any monitor you want and that your laptop hardware can support for stable gaming.
