I keep seeing listings for 1440p monitors at 144hz for around $400-$500 on Amazon, where is the catch? And they are name brand stuff, usually with gsync. Is that just the price of entry level 1440p 144hz 1ms monitors now???

They're 23.8" monitors instead of the usual 27", so they're a bit cheaper. They're also known to have very bad color banding. I have the Dell model myself, wouldn't recommend it personally.

I want the option to play 1440p 60fps for scenic games, but i also want 1080p with a high refresh rate (120hz-144hz) at play competitive games. Is there anything decent for $500 dollars then?

Samsung C27HG70, 1440p 144 Hz VA panel, good color, $500.

They're b grade panels from the likes of Samsung and LG usually. Great panels with slight defects. 

Do your research though ss there are also ones out there that are 60hz panels that have been overclocked and they're terrible.

There are a lot of monitors also being advertised as or at gaming, or maybe that should read “GAMING”, I was walking around a box store near me JB HiFi and noticed all the requirements 144Hz at 1920 x 1080, 1 ms response (grey to grey), Flicker-free, Low blue light, VESA 100 x 100m, 1000:1 DyNormic Contrast Ratio (DCR), e-sports adopted by both players and tournaments and the official monitor for DreamHack Open 2017/2017 etc. all in a 24” bezel. Then after Googling the BenQ Zowie models myself realised that it was aimed at console gaming...
