Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

My 980m is not showing up in device manager, and an error messages comes up when attempting to re-install nvidia drivers. It was working earlier, shut it down and came back to do some work but it wasn’t working. It happened suddenly.

My device is the Gigabyte P37X-V4

Laptops often use the iGPU to save power when not doing any graphic intensive work (or when idling), and this may be the reason for why your 980M isn't showing in device manager.

I suggest you don't worry too much about it.

Btw, welcome to the LTT forums!

EDIT: This is assuming your GPU is not dead.

On the contrary, both devices will show up under "Display Adapters" in device manager at all times if they are functioning correctly. I had this same issue a year ago with a 940M laptop and it turned out the 940M had died.

If you have any unknown devices showing under device manager one of them might be the 980M, but otherwise you might have a dead GPU.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Devices do not remove themselves from device manager just from having a low power mode

That is unfortunate! It definitely used to show up in device manager and doesn’t anymore. I am guessing that it is dead. It is only running the Intel 5600 graphics now
