little more explanation would help - how/where are they going to be used? Do you mean just mounting them to the outside of a PC case? or like... you want two free-floating 120mm PC fans hanging out on your desk? (joking, but some guys at my work do this for real so I have to ask).

If on a PC case you can indeed mount them on the outside generally, and just run the wires inside to motherboard fan headers. Looks ugly but still works fine.

its for a laptop cooling stand, have a cooler master one with 3 80mm fans, but im pretty sure they are on there way out. so i wanted to put 2 120mm fans under it, but not sure how to power or control them. I know usb doesn;t have enough power to run them. just trying to fin other options.

Ah gotcha. I think you can buy some Noctua fans in a 5v version that could run off USB's 5v but most PC fans are 12v so you'd need a 12v AC adapter or something like that to power them.

I could only find 40mm noctua 5v fans. If i can get larger 5v fans. I wonder if i could wire itto the cooler master controller the original fans are connected to.

On their main page they have a news thing at the very top from last summer that seems to suggest they have all sizes in 5v versions, along with a USB 5v power adapter for them.

Why not get an external power supply with a molex connector. You could connect that to a cheap fan controller.
