Hey, thank you for your time and help; I'm really grateful. Could y'all gut check me + give any feedback on performance / cost efficiencies you think would be worth worth investing in? This is my first build in over a decade and with how excited I am to do it, I don't want to overspend where I don't need to. Thank you! Sincerely! ——— Budget (including currency): ~$1,800 USD Country: United States, Oregon (with no access to a Microcenter) Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming only: AAA games (ex. Elden Ring, Starfield), WoW, CS:GO/CS2, Stardew Valley Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Peripherals: Not needed. Upgrading from: Console, Xbox Series Planning to buy: In the upcoming week. Resolution: I'll be playing at 1440p, 144hz Other: I want to stick with an AMD CPU and the 7900 XTX, otherwise I'm open to suggestions. PCPartPicker: The lists are identical with the exception of the CPU—I started with a Ryzen 7 7700x and am considering upgrading to the 7800X3D, even though it puts me over budget. Anyway, do either of these builds feel like overkill in any regard? Ryzen 7 7700X + 7900 XTX Ryzen 7 7800X3D + 7900 XTX

Hello people! I am planning a ~14 Day Roadtrip around the US Westcoast with my GF next year. The idea is to start in San Francisco and then drive over LA to Las Vegas and fly back from there. Now the thing is, all the stuff you find online is tourist crap and I want to get some natives first hand experience here. 1. What are places worth visiting? 2. What are places not worth visiting? 3. Any hotels recommendations? 4. Transportation in the big cities (don't want to waste half the vacation in traffic :D) 5. Others? 6. Tips and tricks? For example we are thinking about visiting Grand Canyon while in Vegas but it's like a 5h drive so it kills an entire day, is that worth it? Thaaaaanks!

Hi, long ago when I was a freshman at university, there was this rumor around which said that you couldnt enter the USA, if you had a laptop on you which was encrypted. Now, in the years working in the Industry, I've come across different variations about that story, some would be that it only applies when you are suspicios, or some would be that it only affects people going to china or russia. Is there any thruth to this ? or is it really just a urban legend ?

Summary Earlier this year, the Biden administration announced a ban on exporting advanced chips and related manufacturing technologies to the People’s Republic of China (PRC). This was done out of concern particularly pertaining to the development of AI, hypersonic missiles, and advanced surveillance systems, and to capitalize on the PRC’s current disadvantage in manufacturing their own advanced chips (typically defined as anything with a lithography smaller than 10nm) and semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Last week, NVIDIA quietly announced a new product - the A800, which is essentially the same as their current A100 but “nerfed” such that it will comply with these sanctions (which take effect early next year) and will be able to be legally exported to China. Quotes My thoughts I think that this is very important since this is the first product announced by a company that is designed specifically to comply with these sanctions. I know that these may be hard to come by outside of China, but if the lab could somehow get their hands on one, and get an a100 as well, then you could benchmark them side by side and directly test the effectiveness of these sanctions. It would be very cool to be able to see the exact performance impact on various AI/compute tasks that these sanctions are having. Budget (including currency): 2500 $US Country: United States of America Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Main use will likely be games, but I also do a little computational work for my research, so I imagine it'd be nice to have some extra RAM. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I'm upgrading from an Alienware m15 R3 laptop, but I'll still want it to be usable. My goal is to have a rig that'll be able to handle a very stable 60 fps at 1440p in most games for the next 5ish years. This will be my first desktop build, so I could use some help making sure the parts I'm getting are compatible and balanced. I'm using Newegg's Custom PC Builder to help me out, but I'm open to buying from other reliable online vendors if it'll cut costs. I already have a mouse and mousepad, so here's everything I'm currently looking at buying within the week: Intel Core i7-12700K - Core i7 12th Gen Alder Lake 12-Core (8P+4E) 3.6 GHz LGA 1700 125W Intel UHD Graphics 770 Desktop Processor GIGABYTE Z690 AORUS MASTER LGA 1700 Intel Z690 EATX Motherboard with DDR5, 5x M.2, PCIe 5.0, USB 3.2 Gen2X2 Type-C, Intel WiFi 6E, AQUANTIA 10GbE LAN CORSAIR Vengeance 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 5600 (PC5 44800) Intel XMP 3.0 Desktop Memory Model GIGABYTE Gaming OC GeForce RTX 3070 8GB GDDR6 PCI Express 4.0 ATX Video Card GV-N3070GAMING OC-8GD (rev. 2.0) (LHR) Corsair iCUE 5000X RGB Tempered Glass Mid-Tower ATX PC Smart Case, Black, CC-9011212-WW CORSAIR RM RM750 750 W ATX 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Power Supply SAMSUNG 980 PRO M.2 2280 1TB PCI-Express Gen 4.0 x4, NVMe 1.3c Samsung V-NAND 3-bit MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-V8P1T0B/AM Noctua NH-U9S, Premium CPU Cooler with NF-A9 92mm Fan (Brown) Microsoft Windows 11 Home (USB) GIGABYTE G27QC A 27" 165Hz 2560 x 1440 1ms (MPRT) 88% DCI-P3, HDR Ready, FreeSync Premium, 1 x Display Port 1.2, 2 x HDMI 2.0, 2 x USB 3.0 Curved Gaming Monitor SteelSeries 64795 Apex 3 Water Resistant Gaming Keyboard, Premium Magnetic Wrist Rest (Whisper Quiet Gaming Switch) 2x Noctua NF-F12 PWM, Premium Quiet Fan, 4-Pin (120mm, Brown) Noctua NT-H1 3.5g, Pro-Grade Thermal Compound Paste (3.5g) And some hook-and-loop straps for cable management. Lmk if you have any questions and please offer suggestions if you think they'd improve the build. If I overlooked anything, please let me know! Here's the Newegg PC Builder link for the build in case it helps: https://newegg.io/4948d2e Edit: Also, I would like to keep noise low (hence Noctua fans, SSD and a hopefully quiet keyboard). Edit 2: Went ahead and locked in on this. Let's hope it works!

Summary The US government is implementing an export ban to halt the sale of top-of-the-line AI chips to Chinese firms. This stems from the growing tensions over Taiwan. In addition to NVidea, AMD has received a similar demand for it’s top AI chips. Only 3 chips overall were cited in the article (A100, upcoming H100, and AMD’s M1250). Quotes My thoughts This is a big escalation by the US in a situation that many were hoping would settle down and go away. The deterioration of relations between the United States and China is very likely past the point of no return at this point, and we are now well into the beginning of the Second Cold War. As with the First Cold War, technology will be a major, if not even more important, part of the arms race as it progresses. Technology is firmly entrenched in the social fabric of both the Eastern and Western worlds, and that which has the superior tech will see advantages in every facet of the conflict. Frankly, I’m surprised it took until now for such tech export bans to occur. China’s aspirations have been obvious for decades, and the current decline in relations began well before the current rise in tensions over Taiwan. However, I’m concerned about the efficacy of such a ban. China has been engaging in tech espionage for decades (ie. Huawei’s use of Nortel tech). Given this level of espionage as well as their developing indigenous tech sector, they might not need western chip designs anymore. This leads to the matter of production. It is already suspected that a significant part of China’s desires on Taiwan stem from the incredible tech manufacturing industry that company has developed. With this in mind, could such a ban by the USA simply expedite China’s plans for an invasion of Taiwan? And if so, is the ban helping the situation in any way, or making it even worse? Source The FCC was ordered by the court to ask for public comments on if doing away with net neutrality helped or hurt consumers. However, the sneaky FCC silently opened up their site for comment and with COVID-19 news taking up most of the headlines this story hasn't received the attention it deserves. Now more than ever with most people ordered to self isolate our reliance on the internet for work and play is more essential than ever before. We all must make our voices heard to demand that taking away net neutrality hurts the average American consumer. The deadline for public comment is March 30th, if you are a resident of the United States, please comment.

I have come to the point where I am looking to upgrade a component of my pc; but, I am unsure of which component is the best to upgrade first. My current specs are a Ryzen 3 1300X with 16gb of 2666mhz ram on a Gigabyte AB350M-DS3H-CF motherboard. For graphics I have a GTX 1060 3gb. While in game this system performs well but I have recently noticed that while gaming I am pulling very high CPU usage (almost always pinned at or near 100%) my GPU seems to stay in the 70 and 80%. I'm not sure if these are signs of a potential bottleneck or this is just how this hardware performs. I play at 1080p and use a 60hz monitor (which is an upgrade option I have been considering) with decent frame rates in most games and medium settings. I am looking to spend about 300$ total on the upgrade and am looking for help from people who know more about this stuff then I do. Thank you. I have also attached a screen shot with MSi afterburner overlay data for more details.

Budget (including currency): $1500 USD Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Tripple A Games and VR in the coming year Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I own a i7-2600k, 16gb ram, GTX 980 on an ol' Asus p8p67. Hey guys, I know for most of you that's almost unthinkable but I spent the past 14 months under a rock deployed with little to no internet and I'd like some info on the new stuff out there... I'd like some suggestions on what's a solid and reliable MB/CPU/RAM/GPU combo. In game value speed and fluidity over graphic quality and I'll be using a single 27' 144hz monitor. I've build multiple pcs before and I'm good with the rest of the parts and accessories...I heard AMD is back in the game and is giving Intel a run for their money? lol... Thx in advance.

I live in Australia and everything has been marked up. I'm reaching out to my fellow Aussies or anyone that knows of a safe reliable way to order from a US based store e.g. Amazon, and get it delivered to Australia. That way i don't have to pay the marked up price. thanks.

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/03/doj-drops-case-against-child-porn-suspect-rather-than-disclose-fbi-hack/ "Rather than share the now-classified technological means that investigators used to locate a child porn suspect, federal prosecutors in Washington state have dropped all charges against a man accused of accessing Playpen, a notorious and now-shuttered website." The privacy advocate in me wants to call this a win but the parent in me is crying foul. "Defense attorneys have attempted to gain access to some, if not all, of the NIT’s source code as part of the criminal discovery process. In a related case prosecuted in New York, an FBI search warrant affidavit described both the types of child pornography available to Playpen’s 150,000 members and the NIT’s capabilities." What do y'all think about this?

This is completely stupid. I'm all for airline security, but this would just result in a huge loss of productivity for everyone. I mean, the lithium-ion batteries im said devices are probably more of a threat themselves. And even the justification behind all this is completely broken. Even if terrorists manage to cram an explosive device into a portable computer, having it in carry on vs stored with the luggage makes virtually no difference, as it could easily be detonated remotely/on timer. But hey, at least now airlines can charge you for their crappy in-flight entertainment right? Source https://9to5mac.com/2017/05/10/us-tablet-laptop-ban-all-europe-flights/

So to begin, I am looking to buy a new laptop from the USA and get it to India via a relative. Anyone have any idea on things I'd need to know? Or someone who's done this overseas thing before? Preferably India? Also this is the laptop I've currently picked out. Comments and recommendations on an alternative(if one) will be appreciated. HERE

Source: https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/ywp8k5/researcher-who-stopped-wannacry-ransomware-detained-in-us-after-def-con Source 2: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-40820837 Title pretty much says it all. The person who was responsible for helping stop - or at least Delay the huge attack on systems around the World by the WannaCry Ransomware has been detained in US Custody shortly after attending "DefCon" and "Black Hat" conferences in Las Vegas. This is not a US Marshals arrest, but an FBI Arrest of Mr Hutchins. This is known as a "US Marshal" gave this comment: There is no known reason as of yet for the arrest, but the FBI has acknowledged a request for comment but decided not release a statement. Since this is a legal investigation, not much more information has been made available. My Opinion: Shortly after delaying WannaCry - MalwareTech, now know to be "Marcus Hutchins" was practically Doxxed by journalists, so now there is information about the user available on line and in the tabloids. Naturally, after such a feet of delaying WannaCry, I can only assume that some governments have been keeping an eye on him or checking is background/History. After attending such conferences that could be questionable, such as Black Hat (Black Hat Hacking is pretty illegal) - I can only assume that made him a prime target. Either way, this sucks for the guy and I hope he gets released soon. Yeah - My opinion has changed and is not worth me typing until more confirmations have arrived. Your thoughts, please leave them down below UPDATE TIME: So - an update has come out from a different source (https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/aug/03/researcher-who-stopped-wannacry-ransomware-detained-in-us) In which it claims that Marcus Hutchins is alleged to have helped Although on another note - possibly a coincidence: The perpetrators are probably doing this as a precaution, but you don't know, perhaps the 2 are linked. UPDATE TIME #2: Just released via SkyNews Twitter: Turns out he was arrested for the advertisement and sale of illegal hacking tools.

Source: Ars Technica, AT&T I'm not from the US but judging from the looks of it, AT&T might be using their higher frequency bands like band 30 to do wireless broadband together with femtocells for improved coverage. Higher frequency bands may have shorter coverage and poor building penetration but they can carry more data than low frequency bands which has good coverage but carries less data. That data cap looks a lot like what my parents are using before but with much lower data cap before I switched them to fiber internet just a few months ago. My country's average internet speed is abysmal at around 3 mbps and I'm just one of the lucky ones who have FTTH (20 down, 20 up) but it probably would have been better if they deployed more fiber optic cables as a backbone and have DSL to extend services because copper is still cheaper than fiber optics. So 160 GB is probably enough for 10 hours of YouTube videos at 1080p and couple Netflix movies at 720p/1080p but not for gaming or constant downloading of games from Steam. Also, you probably should forget being a YouTuber on this wireless internet since the upload speed is terrible at 1 mbps and the data caps are low. A couple 10-20 minutes of daily vlogs in 1080p 30 fps is already at 1.3 to 2.6 GB and not to mention the waiting game because of that upload speed but I don't think the people subscribing to this are vloggers or YouTubers. Some might say this is a good stop gap before deploying nationwide fiber but I think it would've been better if they just deployed massive fiber infrastructures now to future proof America's internet and keep it fast when it's being needed even during peak times. But hey, at least the US entered the top 10 for the first time as countries with fastest internet speeds in the world with South Korea at top 1.

Hi all! Right now I need some of opinions about where to live. Right now I live in Puerto Rico and the hurricane that happen was completely devastating. I personally want o go to Canada or USA since in USA and Canada I can get more options on buying stuff and well, better community and all. Is Canada great to live? Or the USA it's better or normal? Our family doesn't go outside that often, we do not spend a lot of money and we are nice people. If our desicion is Canada we will have to do some magic tricks or something because there's no family there and our grandma lives in USA. If I do not answer quick it is because we are using public wifi and speeds are from 50kbps to 150kbps. Thanks a lot in advance.
