What happens when you miss getting out of the gates? Well, you miss out on money apparently. You see, when Apple Pay was launched, Apple had the leverage due to their tokenization implementations and the banks were willing to give up a slice to Apple because of the security features, a year later however VISA, MasterCard (and others I imagine) have finally standardized those implementations and made them free. What does this mean for Apple? Well, two years down the line they likely will have no more slice. What does it mean for Google? They don't get a slice at all, since they were late to the game and didn't have the leverage Apple had. Its a small slice, sure, but when you factor in the millions (if not tens of millions) of users and the god knows how many transactions, those fees would add up handsomely. I think this is even sadder when Google had mobile payments so long ago yet, in typical Google fashion, sat on their asses with it and never pushed it until after Apple showed up and crapped on the mobile carriers and their closed off payment solutions. http://www.wsj.com/article_email/google-loses-key-mobile-payment-feesgoogle-misses-out-on-apples-slice-of-mobile-transactions-1433546638-lMyQjAxMTE1NjA2NTYwMzU2Wj

I've been playing the augmented reality game Ingress a lot lately. If you don't know what it is, imagine geocaching with a board game of Risk combined. It's a side project through google, and is for IOS and Android. Basically, wherever you are in the real world, you are in the game. Pretty cool shit huh? I'm lvl8, and was wondering if any other fellow LinusTechTippers played.

Hey, I guess I'm kind of too dumb to see the right section in the settings menu, but dor quite a while now, Chrome always notifies me with that yellow warning exclamation mark in the top right corner that I should log in with my user (yes I do that, data privacy ahoi^^), after every system reboot. The settings menu explicitly sais "credentials out of date" and forces me to re-login every time I open chrome. I do not really mind for chrome itself since I do not edit my bookmarks that frequently, but I do also use Google Keep and the frequent login to use it after startup kind of begins getting on my nerve. Funnily enough, Cookies for GMail etc. work just fine. Is this some kind of "Remember me" setting I am too stupid to find? Or is this intended?

Do you use Google's Hangouts which integrates with SMS & Gmail or do you prefer Facebook Messenger to get everybody, even your mom onboard? Maybe you use something else like LINE, Skype, Viber or Slack! Tell me. I try to use Facebook Messenger myself because I get free unlimited chat data with my carrier and all of my friends and family are using it. It's great, but I'd like SMS integration or something more!

My friends and I have been using Google Hangouts for some time now to chat but we are looking for something of higher quality. Requirements: 1) Ability to have different "chats" for different groups with different people in them. 2) Audio calling (VOIP) 3) Group chats/calls Will Skype work?

So what are some really useful/powerful chrome extensions that you use? I think it's time for me to finally take the time and tailor chrome to my tastes. I only use a handful of extensions Speed dial 3, ltt extension, gmail, avast safe price(don't judge me it doesn't really do much and doesn't really waste any resource) So any suggestions?

So, I'm a small youtuber, and I've had an issue accessing google+/responding to my video comments on Waterfox (a 64 bit browser for firefox (as a side note, my father's company's security IT guy says it probably isn't safe, so if you have information on Waterfox, please tell me)), so I tried Microsoft Edge to use as a different browser. After spending a whole night trying to tell Cortana to stay out of my life and not to track me, I decided to open Google Chrome; my old browser which I no longer used because it supposively listened to all my convorsations. I open the page, and it seems to work fine. I go to youtube.com, and all the photo sections are changed to a face of a man, not just any man, but different photos of him. I'm not into pop culture or anything like that (I'm a techie... Seriously, there's a world besides sada cables and SSDs!?), so I can't recognize him. Anyone else have this error, or any ideas how to trouble shoot it? Attatched is a video. I got a cold, so i'm both annoyed and tired of running into errors from so many stupid browsers. Basically: 1) Does anyone else have this problem or know what's wrong? Is it cause I haven't been on chrome? (has my laptop been hacked or something?) 2) Who the heck is that guy? (just curious) 3) Is waterfox a safe browser (my father works for a pretty strong IT based company, so to hear waterfox may be unstable is disturbing) Thanks! -LukeS I_M_3rd

What bugs have you discovered so far in Windows 10? Mine would be Gmail. My Gmail for whatever reason will not load, I have to load the standard HTML version. All was fine before the upgrade then it suddenly doesn't work? It works elsewhere in my house too, I use Google Chrome.

I guess this is good for Google and its investors so yeah. Alphabet is a pretty crap name tho.

Hey guys, I'm having an issue! A few days ago, the Facebook, Google and Twitter (and some other) websites stopped connecting on my main PC. Other devices/computers on the network are connecting fine, and I've tried it with Chrome, Firefox and Edge but none of them work. Other websites connect and load fine, and even the Facebook/Twitter apps on Windows 10 work, but not in browser. Here's a screenshot: It always says 'Establishing a secure connection...'. I've tried a lot of things, checking add-ons, even tried doing a cmd prompt tracert to facebook.com as a friend suggested. Here are the results of that: I've updated to Windows 10 recently, but I believe the sites still worked in the beginning, but not entirely sure. Is there anyone that has had this problem and/or knows the solution? Thanks!

I am currently trying to find a way to set a protected 'default' cell value on Google sheets so that I can have a formula 'locked' in the cell. I need this to work in such a way that if someone was to edit the cell and then delete what they had entered it would revert back to the protected 'default' value. This is because I need a cell to do multiple jobs acting upon other cells with said formula or sometimes being a cell data is input into to effect other cells. My other idea was to get a formula to output to a different cell than the one that it is entered into, but I don't know if this is possible either. EG. =IF(A1=1,B1=2,B1=1) (this formula is typed in C1) If this is the wrong place to post this question then please let me know, but I am running out of ideas as to how to get this to work now! Thanks in advance.

The german newssite Heise.de reported that Google and Samsung announced a new update schedule for fast over air security patches on their android-devices due to the recently discovered vulnerabilty known as StageFright, which can manipulate devices not just by receiving MMS, but also by video-files. These updates will take place regularly about once per month and Google is starting today with updating the Smartphones Nexus 4,5,6, the Tablets Nexus 7,9,10 as well as the Nexus Player. My personal opinion is security vulnerabilies like Stagefright are extremely dangerous and it's good if they are patched as fast as possible, but we will have to see which devices are really going to get these updates especially on the Samsung-site. My HTC One M7 recently died and that puts me in the market for a new phone. Budget isn't really an issue. I want something with ample battery and power to last me (a heavy user) for two years. A good camera is important, as well as massive storage, and nice screen with enough room for activities. Essentially, I'm looking for the ultimate phone. So far my thoughts are either the Galaxy S6 128GB or the Note 5 64GB. Comments, questions, suggestions, and all else is welcome. Thanks guys and gals in advance for your great help!

Hey everyone. Here's a strange problem which I need help with. After upgrading to Windows 10 (Which I already love) everything was fine. All programs work and files are still there. But when I go to Google Chrome and try to play a YouTube video, the audio and playback stutters all over the place. At first i thought this was because of Flash, so I tried FireFox. And it worked perfectly. Then i remembered, Google Chrome uses HTML5, not Flash. So I'm at a loss for what is causing this issue. Your help would be much appreciated.

A discovery in Android operating systems uncovered by a researchers at Zimperium zLabs could be the worst ever reported for Android devices has uncovered a flaw that leaves as many as 95% of Android devices—that’s 950 million gadgets—exposed to attack. The computer bug, nicknamed “Stagefright” after a vulnerable media library in the operating system’s open source code, may be one of the worst Android security holes discovered to date. It affects Android versions 2.2 and on(Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat and Lollipop iterations).Should a hacker learn someone’s cell phone number, all it takes is for that person to send a malware-laced Stagefright multimedia message to an affected phone in order to steal its data and photos or to hijack its microphone and camera, among other nefarious actions. Worse yet, a user might have no idea that his or her device has been compromised. Joshua Drake, vice president of research and exploitation at the mobile security firm Zimperium zLabs, says an attacker can delete the message before a victim has any idea. Google told Fortune: We thank Joshua Drake for his contributions. The security of Android users is extremely important to us and so we responded quickly and patches have already been provided to partners that can be applied to any device. Most Android devices, including all newer devices, have multiple technologies that are designed to make exploitation more difficult. Android devices also include an application sandbox designed to protect user data and other applications on the device. The problem stems from the way Android phones analyze incoming text messages. Even before you open a message, the phone automatically processes incoming media files -- including pictures, audio or video. That means a malware-laden file can start infecting the phone as soon as it's received, according Zimperium, a cybersecurity company that specializes in mobile devices. If this sounds familiar, that's because this Android flaw is somewhat like the recent Apple text hack. But in that case, a text message with just the right characters could freeze an iPhone or force it to restart. This Android flaw is worse, because a hacker could gain complete control of the phone: wiping the device, accessing apps or secretly turning on the camera. Typically, in these situations, companies are given a 90-day grace period to issue a fix. It's a rule even Google abides by when it finds flaws in others' software. But it's been 109 days, and a fix still isn't largely available. That's why Zimperium is now going public with the news. The issue now is how quickly Google will manage to fix this for everybody. While Apple can push out updates to all iPhones, Google can't. Google is notorious for having a fractured distribution system. Several entities stand in between Google and its users, and they routinely slow down the release of new software. There's phone carriers -- like AT&T (T, Tech30) and Verizon (VZ, Tech30) -- and makers of physical devices -- like Samsung (SSNLF) -- all of which need to work together to issue software updates. Google told CNNMoney it already sent a fix to its "partners." However, it's unclear if any of them have started pushing that out to users themselves.if at all The researchers who found the flaws told NPR that they do not believe it is yet in use in the wild. Still, it is potentially the largest flaw ever uncovered in Android. The good news is that Google has a fix. The bad news is that Google can’t send it to most directly—it needs manufacturers and carriers to push the patch out to you. As of writing, it is unclear which devices are still at risk. “All devices should be assumed to be vulnerable,” Drake told Forbes. http://fortune.com/2015/07/27/stagefright-android-vulnerability-text/ http://money.cnn.com/2015/07/27/technology/android-text-hack/ http://www.wired.com/2015/07/hack-brief-android-text-attack/ http://www.cnet.com/news/researcher-finds-mother-of-all-android-vulnerabilities/

Google introduced Project Sunroof, an easy way to test if your roof is suitable for solar panels. It is currently only available in the following cities: San Francisco Bay Area, Fresno CA and Greater Boston MA. Source: http://www.google.com/sunroof I think it is a great way to get an idea about how effective the solar panels would be on your roof and hope that it will also come available in other places around the world.

Hey LTT I'm pretty annoyed at the moment, because my Nexus 7 2013 has finally died. A few moths back, I found a hairline crack in one corner, but the device was still usable. However, now I've got a hairline crack in all of the corners, which is interfering with the entire screen, not just the cracked portions, and I cannot even unlock my tablet, thanks to the interference. Is it worth buying another screen from ifixit such as: https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Parts/Google-Nexus-7-Wi-Fi-2nd-Gen-Front-Panel-Assembly/IF235-000-2 or would it be better to get it from somewhere else (i will get 10 bucks off the ifixit thing thanks to the WAN show) OR should I just get a new tablet all together... Keep in mind that I have heaps of random stuff that I don't want to loose (game saves etc, spent probably more than 500 hours days gaming on the thing). What I might be able to do is to get a new tablet and swap the motherboards around?!? Also keep in mind that I'm a student and money is pretty damn tight (saving for an overseas trip, and parts for a new computer). Wrapping up: Broken tablet screen, should I replace the screen, get a new tablet or ditch the whole thing altogether? Thanks, Ben P.S. I'm in Australia EDIT: I have a dbrand skin on it, and will be putting phantom glass on it if I get a new one, fixed link

Google v. Oracle: Unlicensed use of APIs might be a fair use, US says. I don't know where I stand on this. On one hand I think that our current system needs to be taken behind the barn and double tapped but on the other hand, our system is the system that currently exists and you don't get to blatantly violate it and not expect to get caught. That it is Google give me less sympathy. Its not like they couldn't afford to license what they needed from Oracle and its not like Oracle couldn't take a massive haircut on their fees to make it happen - greed is just good in this respect. Or is it ultimate cheapness in not doing things the easy way? Oh well, lets see how this one plays out. http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2015/05/white-house-sides-with-oracle-tells-supreme-court-apis-are-copyrightable/
