I think you might be overstating that a little. The AXi series is pretty damn good. Yeah EVGA is a high quality unit but the Corsair ain't chopped liver either. The RM OTOH, IS chopped liver and I'd stay far away.

Think of a M.2 drive as an ssd without an enclosure. If you're really space constrained like with a laptop or a NAS it makes sense. On the desktop side though it's nothing more than a curiosity, especially if you already have an ssd installed. A lot of dollars for very little benefit.

Dimwitted got a reaction from daemonowner in Let's talk about the Corsair RM series (properly)
Yeah, good luck. You're asking people to not jostle someone's elbow as they walk through the fire carrying two cans of gas. People have been bitching and pointing and he has the unfortune of having one blow up! That will be referred to at every opportunity from now on by how bad the RM's are... see? It blew up! Knew a guy... exploded, burned the house down... killed the cat... got the dog pregnant... it was awful! Ad nauseum.

Corsair has been hoisted by their own petard and they have to fix it. They taught everyone that a quality unit is important and this is what to look for. And now is telling people not to look at the man behind the curtain. When asked nobody's going to be silent about it.

The demo of this board skews surprisingly young. As such, there is a haste in postings vs reading and research. That means high repetition. Aggravatingly at times. It makes for a piss poor S/N ratio but, really, it's better than silence and echoes. Doesn't mean it can't be civil tho.

What's keeping them alive is the lines that they don't have to touch. RAM hasn't changed. It just keeps coming in and going out. Hands off! But DDR4 is coming. Big changes there. The fans are fine. two good lines and solid performers. Hands off! But not a huge profit centre. Good for rep tho. Their mice are good and solid. Their keyboards are good but have QC issues. The new ones are delayed. The cases are in a state of flux. The old ones have the solid manufacturing but are getting ancient in design. The new ones are as well made but look interesting with some real pizzazz. If they can get their QC under control for the old ones they will weather this little storm. Their AIO water coolers are damn good, basically the class of the field but are under pressure from the competition. They're probably waiting for the new boards and tech to come out before doing a refresh to see what is needed. Probably won't see anything until this time next year.

And then the psu's. This is where the grief hits. I think that a redesign of the RM series AND a new supplier is needed. What they need to do is go to SeaSonic and get a complete line of modular units that replace the HX, TX, RM and CX lines. Reduce to CS (CWT) basic/value line (Bronze), RM+ (SeaSonic) modular line that's great for all types (gold) and the AXi line (Flextronic) heavy duty hi power units with Link software, modular and custom sleeved for a price (platinum/titanium).

Unless Phanteks becomes a much bigger company it won't be a Corsair for a long time. It is small and only has a few products. This allows it to have thinner margins so that it can offer a better bang for the buck to establish itself in the marketplace.

Corsair is in a terrible spot right now. It's grown fast to exceed it's capabilities as it dominates its niche. Too many sku's, too many lines. I'm sure their days are filled with firefighting instead of supervising. You certainly can see it by the problems that are cropping up. Their SSD line is dying on the vine as Crucial and Samsung fight it out putting pricing pressure on the rest of the field. They try to consolidate their line of psu's with a new introduction and have to do a recall right off the bat from a *reviewer's sample*! Pure QC failure. They're falling behind on their intro of the product refresh of their keyboards.

What's happening as they've grown, they need larger quantities of any particular sku. That means larger contracts, guaranteed units from new suppliers that they haven't used before because their usual supplier doesn't have the capacity. It's a loss of nimbleness that they need to satisfy a niche market like the enthusiast one and now, because they were so successful in exploiting it the competition is fierce. It may take an increase in staff to get more oversight with their suppliers or maybe just one person to create order out of chaos. It will need to happen soon. Typical growing pains.

Dimwitted got a reaction from Manny Calavera in Hey! Look the future of ssd's called and they want their price back
This is the fallout of the MX100. Crucial established a new floor when they introduced that and it's hammered everyone else. The ones on sale that get below that pricepoint are the crappy drives that, I assume, they want to blow out. This Adata has the poor JMicron controller and lesser IOPS than average. It's cheap.

Of course, it's an open question whether this will continue once they clear out these sorts of drives. BTW, you should be able to get the 512gb MX100 for $220 or $225 so dipping down to $200 isn't that much of a stretch.

Dimwitted got a reaction from WoodenMarker in Samsung 840 evo vs mx100
    MX100:
Pros: MLC NAND. Proven and reliable
Well engineered: with those extra capacitors for power protection it beats most other consumer grade drives. It will allow for a final write if there's ever a power failure which saves your data. That's enterprise grade stuff.
    Value: absolute killer price point.
Build quality: Micron is a fab. They designed it, made it and sell it. Should be superior to all those 3rd party vendors.
    Cons: middling performer.
Watch your sizes. The 128GB isn't the same as the 256 or 512. And only the 512 is referenced for the speed specs.

    840 EVO:
Pros: Well engineered. Samsung has really set this thing up.
Sizing: One of the largest size ranges with a 1TB available.
Build quality: Samsung is a fab... yadda, yadda, yadda.
Speed: they are among the best on the bench. Problem is that in the real world it's not as noticable. Blindingly fast, really fast, very fast or just fast. Can you tell the difference?
Software: their Magic software is the best by far for a software suite. Very useful utilities to optimise your system. Most drives don't come with *any* software.
Cons: Value: Surprisingly, they've lost this battle to Micron. If they can match pricing then this goes away.
TLC NAND: It is an issue though it looks like the engineering is holding up. Still, it's something that with all the chips out there, Samsung is the only one to go this route. The fact that they are rebranding TLC as something else is telling.

TL:DR Follow the money. Buy the cheapest you can get.

On modular psu's use standard connectors. It would be nice to be able to replace the cables with your choice without having to go the extensions route.

Dimwitted got a reaction from Eargasm in MX100 VS EVO - 30$ Difference, What should I buy?
Be careful. The 240gb doesn't have quite the same good specs as the 512 for the MX100. That said, will you really see a difference? Probably not. I'd go with the value and get the MX100. I just bought 2 240's from Amazon.ca for $110 ea. Couldn't pass up that value.

For those on the fence, go read Brian Beeler's article about the future of all these SSD companies. I think he makes a compelling argument. Doesn't mean he's right but something to think about.
