Trixanity got a reaction from ARikozuM in UPDATE: Ubuntu NOT Dropping 32-bit App Support After All
I'm pretty sure that Microsoft said that they found some performance regressions in (some) 64 bit Office applications.

Trixanity got a reaction from XenosTech in Valve going to end official support for Ubuntu starting from 19.10
I'd say both yes and no. People follow the path of least resistance. Developers might think twice about being lazy and just sticking to 32 bit if it requires them to do extra work to support the application(s) versus migrating to 64 bit going forward. I get the feeling that many people just do things because that's how they've always done them hence we still have apps relying on 32 bit libraries to this day (not counting unsupported legacy apps). If 32 bit is absolutely necessary then you'll just have to work around it otherwise just fix your stuff and transition to 64 bit.

That's just classic incompetence when management doesn't listen to experts. Another fun but equally frustrating video.

However I wouldn't absolve contractors from blame. They develop shit they want to unload. They buy contracts they can't uphold. I wouldn't be surprised if each of those suits had a company that wanted them to push something whether it was the antitank weaponry, the turret or the reconnaissance equipment. I can't imagine stupid ideas come out of nowhere. They've likely been told that a vehicle was in the making and they want their stuff in it. It'll finance their next 10 years of business.

Of course it's obviously just an epic clusterfuck when all is said and done. Lots of idiots with no oversight and cash to burn. Regardless of who's to blame.

These proceedings should be more transparent so they can be shamed for it. That goes for any project built with taxpayers' money.

It seems to me to be the good ol' "make something new to keep things going like they've always been". It's kinda like the Google approach of making new products because that's where the money and prestige is.

I'd really like to know how governments come up with the idea of buying stuff via contracts that are way too expensive and that has way too long timeframes with no guarantees and no recourse when you realize that the contractor lied to you, will ask for more money, will ask for more time and can't deliver on any quality or quantity metric. Rinse and repeat.

Of course you soon realize that these companies buy these contracts for pennies. That you're looking at branches of government that has money to spend so that it has to be spent on something and preferably something visible with some prestige for those attached to these projects.

And then it gets worse when you realize that it spills over across NATO members who have been pressured to buy into this crap. It's like a bad state sponsored MLM-looking kinda deal.

    It's tiresome.

Considering the number times I've criticized this shitty product and gotten flak for it, you'd think there would be no more problems yet they keep coming

It is but AMD has put a limit on RPM by default so it'll max out at 1800. AMD says it translates to 43 dB which is significantly less than previous solutions.

Trixanity got a reaction from LAwLz in Canonical announces Ubuntu will no longer be shipping 32-bit libraries for apps or games starting on 19.10
MacOS drops 32 bit completely this year. The latest OS release which is in beta now is 64 bit only and just to be clear that means 32 bit applications won't run. Public release should be around September. It has also issued warnings for at least a year every time you launch a 32 bit application. I think Apple has recommended developers make 64 bit applications for the last 10 years. In other words 64 bit has been the primary target in that timeframe. I don't think developers in the Mac ecosystem could be any more prepared.

Yeah that's not how it works. I can personally guarantee you that it does not add $400 to the pricetag. Likewise I can guarantee you that a Switch won't cost an extra $400 with an LTE modem.

@leadeater I just looked at the trailer for the console again. If it's representative of the final product it does appear to be a large monolithic die surrounded by GDDR6 chips. Of course it might be a red herring. It's rendered from an angle and everything looks a bit blurry so they're definitely trying to obscure any details.

I also heard a snippet from an interview with Phil Spencer. He says they're going for power and what power they can pack in depends on the price point they want to hit. Obviously no details. So there is still room for disappointment with statements that vague.

It seems like every time they come up with a new visual effect they overdo it in order to really drive home the point of showing it off (I wonder if Nvidia tells them to RTX all the things). I remember when light bloom got introduced like 15 years ago. Suddenly everything was fucking glowing whether it needed to or not.

If they stopped using it like a crutch perhaps it'd actually run reasonably well.

I did see that video. I have looked at multiple sources in fact. As an enthusiast it saddens me to see the legacy burden hampering their ability to go crazy with the design (previously I had hoped for a more novel design). However I obviously understand the reasoning. Of course it remains to be seen what can be done with optimization. Right now it looks okay but completely unimpressive.

I have no reason to believe that Renoir will be chiplet nor do I have one that their custom work will be. So there will be non-chiplet Zen 2. Perhaps AMD will prove me wrong. Although if they will, I'm assuming it'll be in the console form factor, not mobile. I hope they will.

Just for reference the Scorpio Engine in Xbox One X is a 359 mm^2 monolithic APU. I think taping out and producing multiple dies might be a cost constraint for a console project but perhaps it evens out with an otherwise larger monolithic approach. It'll certainly be interesting to see how they intend to accomplish their design goals.

99% sure it's the same as I assume it follows the principle of the actual RAM frequency. The example you give at 2933 MHz is the advertised speed due to it being DDR or Double Data Rate.

I'd seen 499 and same as 2070 repeated in several places, thanks for the correcton, at that price AMD may have a reason for you to buy it then, though a lot is going to depend on thermal and noise eprformance. ATM you can get 2070's in the Uk a 5700XT pricing with a blower so unles AMD's blower really is better it might still fall out badly.

You just confirmed you don't read my posts properly. You're also posting factually wrong information. So that you don't understand the argument is quite evident. That your arguments are contradictory is just the cherry on top. Come back to me later when you've gotten over the hump of digesting things.
