You get warning points if you break the rules (although depending on the severity of the issue we may either issue a warning with no points or just send a PM), which will usually expire after 3 or 6 months. The points themselves don't mean very much, but they are used as a guide to other moderators for the severity of the issue, and for seeing that you have received a few warnings recently.
 
As a rule of thumb, it's best to keep your points <1.
 
Separate from points, although to an extent guided by them, we also give out suspensions, although in most cases only to repeat offenders or for particularly egregious offences.
