Vedge got a reaction from subrooz in How much value does Refresh Rate and G-SYNC have?
I've had good experiences with samsung C27JG50. 144Hz 1440p and a VA panel. No freesync or gsync.

I was able to get for half the price of the IPS 144Hz asus panel. Looks almost as good for image quality and doesnt seem to suffer from the horrible QC lottery of those IPS displays(that are borderline not fit for purpose!.. but I digress).

From playing with both side by side for the past two weeks, I personally dont see much benefit of gsync. Certainly not for that price difference.

    This isn't true.

I was running a 1080 but decided to downsize due to reading in countless places that the 1050 had "the same" encoding performance as a 1080. Only to find that when encoding a 3440x1440 @ 100FPS or a 4K60 stream (both at 250M bitrate) the 1050 couldn't keep up in some instances while the 1080 didn't break a sweat with 75% headroom.

When monitoring encoding usage in task manager on both cards while recording a 4K60 stream the 1050 would stick around 65% usage while the 1080 was at about 23%. Not to mention I was using over 1GB of VRAM on both cards and the 1050 only has 2GB. Not often but every once in a while the 1050 would have encoding spikes and drop frames at my desired resolution and bitrate. For most people this may seem "the same" because they plan on encoding one stream and they do it at a much lower bitrate and often resolution, but for me this wasn't going to fly as the plan was to encode 2 4K60 streams at once via FFmpeg (Or 1 3440x1440 @ 100FPS & 1 4K60).

After contacting NVIDIA I was told that while most 10 series cards have 1 active NVENC chip the 1080+ has 2 and that the encoding chip was not the only factor to consider. Basically the 1080 had more than 2x the encoding performance when compared to every 10 series card below it.

I can confirm that the 1050 cannot encode 2 4K60 streams simultaneously at a 250M bitrate while the 1080 can with 35% headroom. Bottom line, encoding performance is not the same for every card in a series, I learned this the hard way.

Vedge got a reaction from Origami Cactus in Is this samsung curved monitor good?
TLDR: It looks like a decent screen, especially if you find it at a discount. If you can run modern games at 1440p@60 then you should be able to run "competitive" games (LOL, CSGO, Overwatch) at at close to 1440p@144hz. I wouldnt buy two screens, since that would be a waste of money in my eyes. Rather spend it towards a better graphics next time or maybe get a screen with adaptive refresh rate. Those are typically more expensive.

    Long version:
I got this monitor for a Black Friday deal at around half the price of the ASUS PG27 series (both TN and IPS). This Samsung screen uses the same panel as their quantum dot HDR screens. I've also had a chance of having all 3 of them side by side for two weeks now for comparison(Samsung, PG278QR and PG279Q).

Even regardless of the price, my unit has a tiny amount of backlight bleed compared to ASUS models that have piss poor QC. No horrendous IPS glow either since it's a VA panel, excellent black levels.

The image quality is very close to the ASUS IPS model, if only a bit less vibrant. Miles ahead of the ASUS TN. Responsiveness is on par with the  ASUS IPS@144hz, while obviously behind the TN, as tested by eye without any tech.

The only negative I can say is that it has some color banding when looking at test gradient images. However, I wasn't able to find a single game where that is at all noticeable. The one game I did find it in (destiny2 on the aurora borealis at the loading screen), color banding is present on all 3 screens equally, so it might be a game thing.

    No G-sync or Freesync...

Otherwise, an excellent screen for the price, especially if found at a discount, imho. Oh, and did I mention that it doesnt seem to have garbage QC as the borderline not fit for purpose high-end IPS and TN panels from ASUS and ACER?

It does look like this is the trend. How fast this is moving though is a different question. I'd go with 1600 and put the extra money into the graphics instead

What's the goal here? Do you simply want to hammer your system or do you want to get a game that justifies the purchase. Because if it's the former then you can always just download some free benchmarks like Valley or Heaven, it'll certainly give you a decent idea of what your GPU is capable of. If you want to justify your purchase with an actual game then just drop $30 into your Steam wallet and wait until one of those big AAA 2011-2013 games goes on sale for ~$5 again. In the mean time just enjoy the fact that you can play the games you already had with the sliders all the way to the right

Get an i5 4960K or non-K if you're not planning to overclock.

Also, there is no such thing as "next-gen" on PC, it has pretty much always been a gradual increase in quality, with some outliers like Crysis. Look at some benchmarks and decide what kind of performance you want. Then you could extrapolate. It's dangerous however, since you never know what might happen with future hardware (although many people argue it's pretty safe. We only see incremental performance upgrades with each generation, since there is no need for the performance).

One thing to note - hardware requirements have been increasing rather slowly lately and are not looking to get much higher anytime soon. Unless of course we see more ubisoft like bullshit.

There can be no justification for screwing over PC users. Piracy is just an excuse and they know it very well. I agree that you should just buy a game if you want to play it. If it's too expensive, wait for a sale...

    for the op:
Piracy is basically stealing. There is no justification for it in any case, even if it is the only way to get something. I know people who couldn't buy certain  games in their regions because of... reasons I guess? , so they pirated and I dont judge them.

Vedge reacted to ShadowCaptain in Is it worth PC gaming anymore? Why I think I may be switching to consoles.
You just need to stop tinkering around with your PC and play games instead

I literally only buy new PC parts every 3 or 4 years when the PC starts grinding to a halt, I also have my PC hooked up to my TV so I can sit on the sofa with a headset and xbox controller to play games

I mostly only sit at my desk when editing, or playing FPS/RPGs

If your PC cant play it on ultra, stick it on high and enjoy the experience, PC gaming is not a dick measuring contest, I just recently completed black flag on my 11" laptop on lowest settings because it was the only computer I had access too, it was a GREAT time still

PC gaming is NOT about building rigs and messing around - sure that is a part of it, but PC gaming is about the freedom, using any controller you want, using a monitor and desk or sofa and TV, having 30 years of backwards compatibility, having settings that let us choose between frame rates and visual fidelity etc etc etc

That's exactly how it happens. Back when I had a terrible PC, I grew very accustomed to < 40 FPS. I've now been gaming for so long at 60 FPS that I can even tell when I'm dropping to 50. Its like a drug, you get used to it and then you can't go back.
