    I just fucking remembered something.

any of you guys play guildwars (the first one)?

I forgot the party formation but it was a pub party I'm in. 4 warriors 2 archers and 2 other guys as we went with no healers.

the game starts I said in chat "Press and hold alt + F4 to see team statistics and player kill/death ratio" and guess what happened?

5 or so guys just left on the enemy team and my entire team also left leaving me alone and lost it.

lol you're not alone mate. pretty much all the people in my house think that a monitor does all the shit (well except my wife she's a computer teacher at least she know a thing or two).

lol just had an argument against another dude last night. we were having some lan party for csgo (damn I suck at that game).

bought my gaming rig with my old dell monitor (came with the dell studio hybrid).

He use some alienware from like 2011 or 2012. I liked the case though. He kept on annoying me since he asked what's my processor if it's an i5 or i7. I told him it's a i3 3220 and he told me I got ripped buying my pc with a small monitor.
I told him the monitor came with dell studio hybrid I bought as an HTPC back when it came out and it works so nothing wrong with it. So he asked me if he can take a look at what's inside and guess what?

He asked me what is inside my pc why are there tubes. I told him I put some sprite inside so I can just put a straw and sip while gaming.

He was like staring into space for a few seconds.

This happened to me though just a month ago. although not a family member but by a customer.

He bought a pretty high end rig but asked me to assemble it on my shop it worked installed windows 8 65bit and upgraded it to 8.1 installed the latest driver did a 1 hour prime 95 on his stock setting system just to check temps if everything is seated nicely. He went home and afterwards called me that the system won't even turn on. He told me he plugged the power correctly but still wont turn on. I decided I'd go personally to his place to check on stuff since it did work at my shop.

I'm at his home and got a bad welcome by him and his friends. btw I hear his friends saying they won't even try to buy from my shop again and claiming I broke his system when building it and I should replace everything. I told them I'd run a check first.

VOILA!!!!!!!!!!!! them dudes didn't even turn on the power supply switch. everything booted up perfectly they apologized and the friends bought some red horse (beer) had a couple of drinks and told them stuff about the rig and how to oc it.

there are times where non tech people just doesn't know psu have a switch at the back. I found out why they didn't know they were using some really old pc with god knows what psu was inside that has no switch at the back.

I remember some bozo I met on League of Legends.  told me to buy windows 7 ultimate as it's the best. but I already told him I'm happy with windows 8.1. heck  my  work rig has windows 7 ultimate and my gaming one is on a windows 8.1

i didn't care nor bother with the ui or whatnot. both does the job I want them to do and I didn't have any need nor wants to change either.

    then it became 2 people.

1st dude - Windows 7 Ultimate is the best os ever made by microsoft
2nd dude - Windows 8 pro is the best and windows 8.1 is the biggest joke microsoft ever did.

I have some too my classmate in collage when I was still taking BSIT. and he's the no.1 in the school. these are the stuff he says after graduation before even until now.

-Where can I download ram? since his pc has 2gb and he wants 4gb or 8gb.
-Pentium 3 pc uses ddr3 ram and ddr3 HDD(??)
-He said ram is sata as the new one and the old one were ddr3 (pentium 3's)
-He keeps on saying sata III, IV, V, VI.
-He can assemble a pc and install all drivers and stuff within 3 min with a perfect cable management and 4 way sli/xfire, 10 hdd and 2 ssd in raid. (after that I dared him but too bad we didn't have any money to waste just to test it).

I was at the mall @ octagon. (some pc shop in the Philippines). and this lady was window shopping for laptops. The seller guy I don't know what you guys call him (like the sales lady but a dude instead). was spouting so much nonsense just to get her to buy that 8gb laptop with some mobile graphics inside. I asked her what will she do with it. She told me that she would just use it for hotmail and music just that and nothing else. no facebook no tweet none of those. so I recommended her a cheaper 2gb laptop that should meet her needs. but well she didn't trust me and trusted the sales guy lol.

got more lol and also many stuff I remember about me when I don't know jack which is funny but it will turn to a wall of text.

edit: I remember having a classmate say wi-fi as

    "weeee-feeee" well something like that.

Joshua Ondangan reacted to vanished in Difference between Workstation, Enthusiast, High-End hardware?
Enthusiast is typically used to differentiate from things that are "mainstream" (ie, something you'd get in a BestBuy prebuilt).  X99 and stuff like that would be considered "enthusiast".  I'd lump a GTX 1080 in that category too since no one who isn't passionate about their gaming would have one.

Workstation is usually used to refer to powerful hardware designed specifically for, well, "work", as opposed to gaming (ie, rendering CAD stuff, running fluid dynamics simulations, etc.).

"High-End" just means anything powerful and expensive usually

Joshua Ondangan reacted to vong in Difference between Workstation, Enthusiast, High-End hardware?
Well to me workstation means as the name suggests - work. Whilst enthusiast means out of reach of the regular consumer and high end being the best that regular consumers can buy.

Joshua Ondangan reacted to straight_stewie in Difference between Workstation, Enthusiast, High-End hardware?
This is a tough question, since there is no well-defined, technical difference between them. So I'll do my best to provide some general rules for differentiating the "classes" of computer hardware here:
Enterprise Things like Tesla graphics cards and "archive" drives. These are things designed to run supercomputers and servers for enterprises and big businesses. They are designed to run full load, full speed, and full heat, 24/7 for years on end. They are the absolute most expensive and hardest to source parts. Workstation Things like Quadro graphics cards or even high end GTX card (like the 1080). These are designed to run single user workloads such as CAD/CAE, video/image editing/rendering, and other single user work based uses. The drivers are geared towards these purposed and, in the case of graphics cards, often don't even work well (or at all) for things like gaming. They are very reliable and pretty expensive. Enthusiast Extremely high end consumer components. They fit a niche market for the consumer, gamer, or DIY PC builder that craves performance and rarity. They are the upper class of consumer components. They can range from "budget" to "rich bitch" in cost and offer anywhere from acceptable performance and reliability to light workstation use. These are most of what you hear about on LTT and almost exclusively the parts used to build DIY PCs. Occasionally you will see them in high end store bought computers. Consumer These are geared at the layman... err, I mean, the general consumer. You will find them at your local Walmart and Best Buy. They represent the class of components that is useful for web browsing, movie watching, and very very light gaming (think, the sims). These are the cheapest of all components.

if you building now buy 1080 if you building 3 or so months later then get whichever is better. if you building 6 months or next year then just buy the best that is currently available at that time mate.

If you keep on waiting pretty much nothing will happen, unless you're willing to wait until the time a gtx 1080 or 1080ti would become 30$ each.

Joshua Ondangan reacted to Elerek in My first build
So up until now, I've just used laptops, but I finally decided to build a pc.
I just recently graduated college and got a decent job, so I have some money to work with, but I also have student loans to pay off and a wedding coming up, so I needed to keep it reasonable.

I really enjoy virtualization and I've wanted a fully virtualized system for a while now for several reasons, on top of that I found out about the $75 E5-2670 cpus, and I had my starting point.

This build will be a dual headed gaming rig for myself and fiance, a nas, and a development pipeline server for my private projects.

I managed to get 2 E5-2670's for $68 each after shipping, and an Intel s2600gz motherboard for $99. Got the original water coolers from the motherboard and 2 riser cards for about another $100, and 2 750 Watt redundant psus for $15 each. Finally I found a steal on 4Gb ddr3 ecc ram at $3.50 a stick, and grabbed 8 of those for now (the board has 24 slots, so I can triple my ram to 96Gb without needing more ram per stick. All of this was used on Ebay.

Of course, the oddly shaped (and enormous) motherboard and it's 2 power supplies aren't going to fit in a normal case, so I went down to the local lowes and homedepot, and bought an 8'x4.5"x.5" board which I had cut into 4 2" long segments, a 2'x2' sheet of birch plywood, and a ton of screws, bolts, washers, and angle brackets. I also grabbed a 2'x2' sheet of acrylic later and ordered some glass standoffs on ebay for about $1.25 each. Out of this I made a box and mounted everything inside. I cut holes for the two radiators, but I don't have a lot of tools to work with, so I just made two round holes for each one, roughly corresponding to where the fans will be on the inside.

I replaced the screaming 40mm server fans in the psus with 40mm noctuas, got 2 120mm noctuas for intake fans, and 2 80mm noctuas for the radiators. I'll need 2 more later, but for now this is what I've got. I managed to squeeze in an evga 1070 sc (literally and financially) along with a usb 3.0 pcie card. I'll get a second gpu, likely a gigabyte mini 1070, for my fiance probably at the beginning of next year. I already had 2 terabyte harddrives (the second one hasn't been mounted yet, so it's not pictured) and a 512 gb ssd.

The screws holding the motherboard are countersunk on the back of the plywood and screw into t-nuts on the motherboard side, then there's a nut and washer as standoffs, and another washer and nut on top to hold in the board.

Also pictured is the template I drew for the fan holes in the acrylic. I was really scared of cracking it, but it actually went super smoothly. Four small holes for mounting, and six large holes around the fan blade area for air flow.

Due to where the system is in the house, there's not a good way to get ethernet to it, so I actually stuffed in a router that bridges to the main router across the house. That also allows me to plug in all four nics on the motherboard. I'm passing through 3 of them to different vm's, allowing them to easily have their own mac addresses and dedicated internet lines.

I haven't finished optimizing everything for my windows 10 gaming vm, but it does have the 1070 passed in to it and games just fine so far. I'll put up some benchmarks once everything is set up properly.

    Software setup right now:
host ubuntu mate system with kvm setup
       centos vm for development work
windows 10 pro with 1070 passed through

I think I've spent about $900 on this build so far. With the second gpu installed, it'll be about $1300 for effectively 2 gaming rigs and a server. Not too bad for my first build I think

should do you fine but majority of people who say they will add another gpu in the end doesn't really add another and just buy a whole new gpu together and say they will add another (well not really but you get my point)

if you will add another 480 make sure it's in the next payday or something because you will "probably not add it in the future" performance wise I think the 480 is pretty good at it's price and depending on where you buy.

As many people here said it right, the tubes will degrade in 1-1.5 years, so the block will. Ekwb components server people for years and years (if you're maintaining your loop right).
I was saving for my first wc loop for like 3-4 years, but when everything was set up - this was an orgasm.

how about your psu? well normally all should be good with a decent brand and enough headroom but just to let you know like what others have said xfire/sli sometimes doesn't work nicely as a single gpu option.

well overall everything should be good the 480 is a nice card.
