Volbet got a reaction from WkdPaul in COVID-19 - READ THE RULES BEFORE REPLYING
Damn, people are getting their shots early.

Where I live they're considering reshuffling the age at which you're eligible for the vaccine. Currently, it's oldest to youngest, but now it might switch to youngest to oldest.
Either way I'm pretty much stuck in the middle, and I can't expect my first shot until the end of August and my last shot some time in November.

The government have floated the idea of offering both the AstraZeneca and J&J vaccines on a volunteer basis. If that becomes a reality I'll see if I can jump on that opportunity.

Volbet got a reaction from Taf the Ghost in Sonova buys sennheiser headphone division
There certainly is a lot of overlap in the R&D of consumer and professional equipment, but I'd wager that Sennheiser is mainly trying to get rid of their manufacturing cost.
Sennheiser has to move a ton of headphones to make up for the up-front manufacturing cost, and my guess would be that they dust aren't moving that kind of product. Sennheiser might be highly regarded in enthusiast circles, but that's still a very small niche compared to the broader consumer base.
This is the same reason why JBL have considered ceasing their consumer production a couple of times.

The professional sphere is probably a lot more profitable (or has the potential to, at least), as a manufactures can sell more expensive products to make up for a lower volume. You can't really do that with regular consumer products, as there are more tighter limit to how much people are willing to spend.
As per the press release, Sennheiser will continue making professional recording equipment, communication devices and continue with their Neumann brand.

It's officially time to experiment with ripping 4K Blu-ray movies.

I've amassed quite a few 4K movies and it has bothered me that I haven't been able to make a digital backup of the discs.

    I bought an Acer CG437KP.

It was a fucking nightmare getting it mounted to the wall, but it's there now.
So far it's been been really nice to finally upgrade to 4K.

Yes, my cables are a mess, but that's getting sorted out ASAP.

Volbet got a reaction from DARA_SL in "Max CPUID Value Limit" What is it?
It's pretty hard to explain, but here is my try.
When your system boots up, the OS is requesting the CPU to indentify itself. This is done via the CPUID instructions.
The problem occurs when Hyper Threading enter the picture.
Some older operating systems aren't capable of recognizing hyper threaded cores, since the CPUID value is to high. This can cause issues.
The ´Max CPUID Value Limit´, limites the CPUID ot the lowest that older operating systems can recognize, hence circumventing the problem.
Essentially, if you are running a OS that is XP or newer, you don't need to turn it on, since these are capable of recognizing hyper threaded core.

Volbet got a reaction from linuxChips2600 in What do you think about the term 'Influencer'?
The doubt about whether or not something is marketing or genuine praise is the driving force behind influencer marketing.
You're much more inclined to trust a genuine experience than an ad. That's why old infomercial had testimonials all throughout their runtime.

The main reason why people, who would be considered influencers, are hesitant to adopt the title of "influencer" in front of their audience, is that it signals a commodification of the parasocial relationship between content creator and audience. In that sense, it creates a paradox of sorts.
If an influencer acknowledges that they are an influencer, they're losing the relationship makes the influence possible.

I bought a Vincent SV-237MK speaker amplifier for the living room. I swear, hifi equipment has the sexiest names:

Yes, I'm waiting for a new shelf, as well.

It's meant to replace a Harmon Kardon Citation tube amplifier, which was honestly more work than it was worth.
The Vincent is a very decent piece of kit for the money. It has plenty of power and it sounds great.

By this point I'm sure having a hobby is just being a shopaholic with a purpose.

    It's apparently HiFi-day today:

I got a pair of Gold Planar GL2000 headphones:

A friend of was hyping them up and for the price I thought I would give them a try.
For a relatively new, Chinese headphone maker, Gold Planer has made a very decent product. They sound very good for their price and the build quality is decent.
I might do a full review of them in the near-ish future.

I also got a new, but old, Denon DL 103R phono cartridge for my Denon DP-47F.

For some reason, the Denon DP-47F doesn't have VTA adjustment, so I thought buying a NOS Denon seemed like the best bet.
I've also be curious about Denon's higher end cartridges for a while, I took the plunge one was DL160 was worn out.

Volbet got a reaction from sub68 in Horology on the LTT forum- A watch thread
I was never too into watches, but I am into weird and unusual tech. In this day and age I do believe a watch should serve as more than a timepiece.

    Here's my daily-use watch:
The name of the watch is The Watch Firebird.

It's a nixie, cold-cathode vacuum tube digital watch made in Russia. The clock chip is a Micro Crystal RV-8803-C7 and the housing is made of anodized aluminium. The watch is only splash proof, but I've also never gone diving with a watch.

It did originally come with a silicone strap, but I never really liked the feel of those. I swapped the strap with a metal strap from an old, broken Omega watch I had laying around. Mainly because it was the only 24mm strap I had access to.

No worry, the Omega watch is now sent out for repair.

Apart from that this is what I got:
From left to right it's an older model Garmine Vivomove, a Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 and a Seiko 7T92.

I use the Garmine for my daily runs. The battery life is pretty decent, and the statistics it provides are accurate enough for me.

The Samsung smart watch was a gift from work. I never really could get used to it. It's a really nice piece of tech, but the features it offers are pretty overwhelming. All I wanna do is see the time, but that's often buried under notifications, a pedometer and a heartrate sensor.
I also can't get used to charging my watch once every two-three days.

The Seiko used to be my daily carry until I broke the strap by accident, hence the random replacement. It's surprisingly good and sturdy for a cheap quartz watch. Once I find a suitable replacement strap I might very well take into my daily rotation again.
The only quirk is that it tends to just randomly lose five mintures after setting the time.

So far so good. They don't really sound like the Grado headphones I've tried in the past, as these are really mid-focused. Their soundstage is also very impressive.

I got myself a new keyboard and some fans for my case.

The wireless Dell keyboard in my home studio decided to conk out yesterday. It had 15 years of trusty service. Might give it a worthy viking funeral.
I decided to move my Ducky keyboard down there and buy something new for the office. Not gonna lie, the keyboard market is fucking confusing these days, so I just pulled the trigger on something that seemed to fit my criteria. Might switch the keyboards again, after I figure which one is the best one to type on.

I got the fans, as I'm really tired of the noise the ones in my case makes. Now I'll have all Noctua all the way around.

I also got some German litterature to keep myself occupied during our 11th month of lockdown:

Also, I do realize my deskmat really needs to go in the washer.

It's surprisingly difficult to find such cables in a meaningful length.

Also, the I was just reminded of how unmusical the Shure SE846s are. They'll bring out pretty much every flaw there is in the mixing and mastering in your music.
