alexcheetah got a reaction from FlyinHawaiian in AM3 to AM4
After 7 long I have finally decided to retire my Phenom II x4 965 BE build in favour of a Ryzen 7 1700.
As part of this build I am not going to use all new parts. I am going to reuse the Asus R9 290X, the EVGA 750W Supernova power supply, the CF card reader and the old fans from my old pc.
New parts:
Phanteks Enthoo Pro M Tempered Glass
Ryzen 7 1700
Cryorig H5 Universal
RGB DDR4 3466MHZ CL16 (CMR16GX4M2C3466C16)
Cryorig AM4 bracket
Old parts:
Asus DirectCU II AMD R9 290X
EVGA Supernova 750G full modular
All the new parts ready to be assembled.
Prepping the motherboard for the cooler...
Inserting this cooler was a breeze....
getting the cabling ready for installation...
Setting up the power supply and cabling...
Motherboard now in the case...
the card goes in next...
all the components in and all the cabling connected.

alexcheetah reacted to kazuma in [Completed] Project: OverDrive
Hey Guys!
Got another incoming project in partner with EVGA, CoolerMaster, Zadak511 and Thermaltake! CoolerMaster was generous enough to throw in one of their most gorgeous computer case, the MasterCase Maker 5T! And I will be calling this project "OverDrive".
This is one of the things that I love about this piece of gorgeousness, the top handle.
And here's a few more photos of this gorgeousness.
EVGA showed their awesomeness again with their support by sending in some of their awesome hardware!
I'll be using some of Thermaltake's newest fittings, the Pacific M-Pro fittings.
And here's their new Digital Temperature Sensor/Indicator fitting.
And here is the second reason why I am soooooo pumped with this project. I will be using a pair of bad-ass looking RAM from ZADAK511. Shield RGB DDR4 16gb RAM! These looks awesome out of the box! Well, the unboxing of it was a puzzle but yet one of the most amazing unboxing I have ever experienced.
When I opened the box up, I was surprised that there were some compartments/dividers. I'm like, "wuuuuuuuut is this??" So I started pulling them out and then, well, see for yourself.
The thing came with patches, a lanyard, some gloves and a SSD!
In case you were wondering "I thought it was supposed to be DDR4 RAM?", well, that's exactly what came into my head when I opened it up. Remember what I said above that the unboxing experience of this was a puzzle? The DDR4 RAM were carefully hidden on top. There was a piece of cardboard that you need to pull aaaaaaaand...
Don't they look amazing? So after pulling all those out, I thought that was everything, buuuuuuuut! I accidentally pulled the piece of box where the RAMs where sitting, and what I found was just amazing. It came with Google VR Cardboard!
After discovering the VR cardboard, I have spent probably 20 more minutes trying to see if there are more hidden loots in that small box. But sadly, that was all. But still, the loots that came with the box really surprised me.
Well, there's more photos to come but that's it for me for now. See you guys in the next update! Ciao!

Followed.
I personally find this kind of build to be way more interesting than most super-expensive projects with overkill hardware and billions of fittings, where modding often involves a 3d printer and a cnc mill (not that I wouldn't build verktøy cu if I had the money and skills, but still). I'm really interested in seeing how you'll build that desk (and possibly watercool it). Good luck!

alexcheetah reacted to Morgan MLGman in AMD Ryzen R5 1600X & 1500X Review - TechPowerUp
Yeah, because it's completely legit to benchmark the i5-7500 with 3200MHz RAM if only Z270 chipset supports it and nobody pairs a locked i5 with Z270 chipset (because those motherboards are a lot more expensive than B250/H270 ones)...
And since highest RAM speed that B250 and H270 chipsets support is 2400MHz, why wouldn't it be what they pair locked i5s with?

alexcheetah reacted to Morgan MLGman in AMD Ryzen R5 1600X & 1500X Review - TechPowerUp
It's not "all of a sudden" - we all knew it was coming, sooner or later. GPUs have been getting more and more powerful each year while CPUs were a joke in that regard.
See Kaby Lake? What the actual fuck was that? No IPC improvements and a 200-300MHz clock speed bump at a bit higher prices. So two generations of almost exactly the same performance. Same was with Haswell/Broadwell, same was with Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge.
In the meanwhile, Nvidia released a 780Ti which got beaten by a mid-ranged 970 just next generation, then they released a 980Ti which gets beaten by a (arguably) mid-ranged card, a GTX 1070 (at least at stock) AGAIN, in a single generation. And nothing indicates that the trend will stop, especially that they just released the Titan Xp.
People who buy i3s and Pentiums buy H110 boards cause they're VERY limited in features and they're lowest-end.
People buying locked i5s aim towards B150/B250 and H170/H270. RAM prices are weird and you can VERY often get a 3000MHz+ kit for the same, or almost the same price as a 2133/2400MHz one so even the fact that such memory is ALLOWED on cheaper Ryzen boards is an advantage on its own.

alexcheetah reacted to WMGroomAK in AMD Ryzen Community update #3: AMD Balanced Power in Windows
I originally noticed this article over at PCPer and AMD has now released their third Ryzen community update, which includes their own version of a Ryzen optimized Power Plan for Windows. Accordint to the PCPer article, one of the issues that Windows Power Management has been having with the Ryzen chips consists of:
The guys over at PCPer tried to deconstruct what exact changes have been made in order to create the AMD Balanced Power Plan over the High Performance Plan and created the following chart (Note: Units differ varying by parameter in this chart - compare within each set of 3 bars):
In addition to this, AMD is reporting a performance update in Total War: Warhammer with the Bretonnia Update released on March 27th.
In the final part of the community update, they have an update coming out for the Ryzen Master software that will report the junction temps for the CPU rather than the tCTL temps by removing the tCTL offset that is applied on the 1800X, 1700X and 1600X processors:
https://community.amd.com/community/gaming/blog/2017/04/06/amd-ryzen-community-update-3
Tech Report Article: http://techreport.com/news/31710/amd-offers-a-power-plan-in-its-third-ryzen-community-update
Of these updates, it is good to see that they will hopefully have something in place in Windows for the Power Management and Core Parking issue that has been occurring. Of course, it would have been better had these things not been needed in the first place.

alexcheetah reacted to sgloux3470 in Ryzen Gaining in Games?
Ryzen is absolutely trashing intel, people just haven't noticed yet.
1. Price. You can get 6c/12t for the same price as intels 4c/4t.
2. IPC. We thought we were optimistic a year or two ago expecting haswell IPC. We got broadwell-e. And SMT scales better than HT pushing AMD's performance past intels in many workloads.
3. Multithreaded workloads. AMD is doing everything Intel does here much cheaper. $330 CPU matches a $1500 one.
4. Power efficiency. It's funny how everyone stops talking about power consumption when AMD is winning, but won't shut up about housefires when they're not. I even saw a few benchmarks where reviewers went out of their way to downclock intel chips just so they could be at the top of the graphs.
5. Gaming. When paired with high speed RAM we're seeing Ryzen achieve way better 1% and 0.1% minimum framerates, which is the metric people should be paying attention to. Widespread reports of Ryzen being a silky smooth gaming experience all over. A $220 R5 1600 will largely perform identically at the same clockspeeds that we're seeing from the R7 lineup as well, which means better than the i5 in most cases.
As it stands right now the only CPU's worth any money right now in intel's lineup are the 7700K and the G4560. Everything in between or beyond is outmatched by Ryzen by offering more cores, better power consumption/thermals and smoother gaming. The only reason for the 7700K is for high refresh rate gaming, and the G4560 is still the best budget option for now.
But alas, the 7700K has slightly higher maximum framerates in some cases so everyone is going to keep pretending that Intel didn't have their entire line up blown the fuck out. What Ryzen has done is the equivalent of a $100 GPU performing almost on the same level as the TitanXP and people are focused on a minor FPS differential. They're ignoring the cost effectiveness simply because the R5's haven't launched yet and they're going "Well the R7 1700 is the same price as the 7700K, and the 7700K sort of beats it in very specific scenarios, so I guess Ryzen sucks." They're right to not recommend the R7 1700 to pure gamers because the R5 1600 represents even better value than the R7 1700 does.

alexcheetah reacted to Tellos in Ryzen Gaining in Games?
@sgloux3470 Thats because the 7700k is the most recent Chip designs by intel so no it's entire line up is not being thrashed and even places where AMD is winning it's not doing so by the stupidly high numbers AMD printed. I:ve seen dozens of benchmarks and it's just not happening. But thats fine those gains only really get noticed in benchmarks really. Most playing on Ryzen with good rigs are not gonna suddenly goign to notice 5 to 8 frames per second. Also I am not talking price strictly performance. Price wise AMD is making intel wet the bed and shit it's pants.
What the vast majority of gamers WILL notice. is they can get smooth great frame rate gaming on most modern games on good rigs using Ryzen for less than Intel prices. so what if Intel can get you 180FPS and Ryzen only 170FPS on the same game with same settings. Fact is your getting awesome performance for less.

alexcheetah reacted to Morgan MLGman in Ryzen's Infinity Fabric Clock Speed is Linked to Memory Clock Speed... Might Explain Why Memory OCs Make a Noticeable Impact in Performance on Ryzen?
That's actually not confirmed anywhere IIRC. Though it's very likely because from what I know, that one CCX supports one memory channel so you need two to allow RAM to go in a dual-channel mode.
Infinity Fabric is not micro-pcie, it's more of an equivalent to Intel's QPI link which is used to connect CPUs in dual-socket PC's. Though Infinity Fabric is quite a bit faster, especially with a memory OC. It's faster than QPI even with RAM at 2133MHz and that bandwidth increases hugely when a memory OC is applied.
