Another 4gb 750ti, ABBA’s Gold CD, and a power switch for my commodore 64’s monitor which cost me more than I was comfortable paying but it’s the only one so I paid it anyway

soldier_ph reacted to scissors in Google Cloud accidentally deletes $125 billion Australian pension fund’s online account due to ‘unprecedented misconfiguration’
Summary
Unisuper is a superannuation fund (think pension fund) that manages retirement savings for members of Australia’s higher education and research sector. With 620,000 members and $125 billion in assets, they’re Australia’s 13th largest by number of members and 7th largest superannuation fund by assets managed. For the last week, Unisuper members have been unable to access their accounts due to what turns out to have been the wholesale deletion of the fund’s Google Cloud account. The fund had to recover their data from a backup at a different provider, as the deletion affected two redundant instances stored on Google’s service. Account access is slowly being restored. It isn’t clear at this point what exactly happened to cause this incident, other than that Unisuper and Google Cloud have issued a joint statement to the effect that it was due to an “unprecedented sequence of events.” Unisuper had migrated a large proportion of its operations to Google Cloud Platforms in 2023.

My thoughts
At least they had backups outside Google? Superannuation in Australia is a highly regulated industry, providing a lot of incentive to do things properly. What would have happened in a less regulated environment? It certainly drives home the idea that “backups” stored in the same infrastructure as the primary data aren’t actually backups. It remains to be seen who has what share of the blame, but it's certainly an indication of how vulnerable this kind of data can be without the proper processes in place to secure it.

Big ass brakes
203mm in the front and 180mm in the rear
at real risk of ripping the mounts off the frame and fork at this point but that’s part of the fun
the front rubs under hard banking and turning, since the whole thing flexes a little

Wing commander series might be ancient at this point but it's got a better likeness of Mark Hamill than either of the battlefront remakes do lol

So ? Just because you see her Input on this Forum as not constructive or helping doesn't mean she or anyone else shouldn't be allowed to Post such Stuff. As long as one follows the Forum Rules they can do what ever they want here.
I'm personally a big Fan of the Off Topic section because it's cool for talking about non Tech things as well. And I appreciate that the Mod Team is chill, straight forward, fair and that you can also make jokes with them.
Oh and May the 4th be with you all !

After 11 years here and the worst management we've ever had I've finally taken the gloves off this week.

Earlier this year I received a 3TB Seagate Ironwolf Pro in the post without having ordered one. Turns out it was a gift from Ugreen. Thanks guys.
Two months ago I ordered some filament. To this day the shop can't tell me where to send the money .... How can you run a sustainable business if you can't tell a customer how to pay for it?
Today I had another surprise: A 256GB SSD?????? I haven't ordered one of these in months.
Searching through my ebay purchase history this is half a year late, the first shipment got lost, never sent or whatever (seller issued a refund/cancellation of the order) and now they shipped it? 6 months later????

At this point I'd be perfectly okay with Valve putting their big boy pants on and going toe to toe with MS. Just tired of MS's bullshit at this point. Xbox is crumbling, Windows is a shitheap of bloat and ads to the point where I hardly game on my PC due to the incessant issues. My Steamdeck and PS5 get much more attention lately.

Upgraded to a Aorus RTX 4090 Waterforce AIO GPU and also swapped out the PSU to a 1000W unit. The Lian Li fans should work properly (connected to fan hub now) once a plug adapter arrives from the UK. Cablemods 90 degree adapter plug will enable me to fit the side panel on without trouble. Need to tidy up a few cables a bit. Nephew is getting old 3080 and 850W PSU to put in his NZXT rig.

You can bet they are going to kill many more. Embracer is the same. They buy because supposedly they want the IP in their portfolio and one studio can cover for the others, but as soon as anything goes south, they close the studio.

That Arkane Austin shutdown really sucks. Prey was awesome. I had little interest in playing Redfall, given its multiplayer focus. And even if by all accounts that game sucks, apparently, I would've loved to see them get another chance at an immersive sim. Because these days, Arkane seem to be the only ones in the big budget development space who are interested in this sort of thing. And it makes me worry what'll happen with Arkane Lyon. Because I'll be honest, this sort of stuff was perfectly predictable. The recent consolidation of gaming studios under a few holding companies always spelled doom for some studios. Because that's the natural course of all mergers and acquisitions. Microsoft ain't gonna make investors happy by buying studios and keeping around talent. They make investors happy by buying IP, laying off employees and thus make the drain on their resources look better in their books.

Summary
Microsoft has decided to shut down four of its game studios: Tango Gameworks, Arkane Austin, Alpha Dog Games and Roundhouse Games (Alpha Dog and Roundhouse will be merged into Zenimax Online Studios).
Tango Gameworks confirmed all of their games will remain on the store and will remain playable, Arkane Austin confirmed Redfall online service will remain and players who bought the Hero Pass as part of the premium Bite Back Edition or the premium Back Bite upgrade will be eligible to receive the in-game credits, with no details about Prey. Alpha Dog Games confirmed Mighty DOOM development has fully stopped and has also disabled the ability to purchase in-game currency while also providing request refund option for anyone who bought the in-game currency.
IGN confirmed in an e-mail that were sent to staff by Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, Microsoft blamed the cuts on a “reprioritization of titles and resources”. On the other side of the gate, Arkane Lyon Co-Creative Director, Dinga Bakaba, took notice of this shutdown and called out Microsoft, saying that this shutdown is "absolutely terrible."

finally installed the 7900 xtx into the pc..back plate of the card still too tall causing the 2nd internal usb-c header to not be able to plugged in ..kinda bit dissapointed with the support bracket while is included with the card .. just screw on to the screw slots and thats it , only a small piece actually touches the card and supporrts it , while the old card (xfx 6800xt) has a bracket which screws onto the card .. while a distant ancestor makes a appearance ..
