Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to either leave this forum or stop spewing complete ignorance. Honestly, if you actually distrust Linus and LMG, I'm genuinely confused as to why you're still on this forum. You're entitled to your own opinion and I have no right to take that away from you, but what you're saying sounds like some next-level conspiracy theory crap. If you've watched LMG's honest answers series, you'll know that they're an extremely genuine, legitimate and honest company. They obviously don't need my help or defense or anything like that, but I truly believe you need to tone it the fuck down and stop bad-mouthing a company that's never done anything wrong and is actually a far more honest company than a lot of other YouTuber companies out there.

There are numerous retail locations littered around your community that would carry such an item.  You may purchase such an item from these venues in exchange for currency.

PCPartPicker is basically just an amalgamation of most of the PC parts in this world taken from a bunch of different sellers (such as Newegg and Amazon) in order to get you the cheapest possible price for that part. Now, as it turns out, they don't have many parts in Germany, so I was unable to stay true to the original list, and shit's fucking expensive in Germany, so I was further unable to to stay true to the list, and I was forced to downgrade in multiple instances just to stay under 1000 euros, but anyway, here's the final list: http://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/zZrskT.

Here's the list of changes I made:
Downgraded to an i3-6100 because the i5 didn't fit in your budget. Downgraded to the Asus Z170-E motherboard because the other one was too expensive (don't worry, this one should be just fine for your needs as well) Had to downgrade to 8 GB of RAM (don't worry, most games barely ever go above 6-7 GB) at a lower clock speed of 2400 MHz (again, don't worry, this was proven to have a really minimal impact on performance by a video made by Linus himself) I added an SSD, because believe me those are awesome and you're really going to thank me when your PC boots up faster than you can look up at your monitor (very slight exaggeration) Downgraded to a slightly worse (but less expensive) 1060 Downgraded to a less expensive PSU, but it'll still be fine. Downgraded to an optical drive that actually exists in Germany (although, you're honest with yourself, do you really need that cup holder sorry, optical drive? Because you most likely do not.) I mean seriously, it's fucking expensive to live in Germany and be a DIY builder.

I mean it's not really worth it to tell him anything about the current server, because it's already been bought and is on its way, but for future servers I want him to know. It's not really a "small" file server, it's the only one for a not-too-small school, and I want to make sure that nothing happens. It's honestly not even that much cash, and we'd definitely still be underbudget if we went for it.
Yeah, we'd still be within the budget, but strangely, that's not the issue that my boss has been citing. He's simply been saying that it won't happen, and not providing any evidence or counterarguments to support his claim. I don't know that the school would stop doing business with us, and my boss could find a way to deflect it if something happens, but I'm really just trying to make sure it doesn't happen, and I'm not even sure what to say to him.
Precisely, and I'm really not sure we have any sort of backup for this thing (another point I tried to bring up with them)...

Yeah, I got a pretty damn nice result if I do say so myself.
I know it doesn't look like much, but it's kind of supposed to be a background for something else, not really a standalone image, so I'd say it's pretty nice for a background.

So I'm really not sure if this is the correct subforum to be posting this in, and if this is the incorrect one then feel free to move the thread, mods. Anyway, I've made myself a pretty darn cool background (if I do say so myself) in the form of this:

And it's basically an amalgamation of 15 of my favorite hardware manufacturers, e.g. case makers, SSD makers, etc. Now before you get mad that there's no AMD or <insert favorite parts manufacturer here> or that you don't like Razer, etc., request your own, because I'll be taking requests and if you'd like to include AMD or whatever, then say it down below and I'll get working on it. Essentially, tell me what companies you'd like (I can do a single company as well) and what colors you'd like in the background blur (and make sure they aren't too vibrant because that could clash with the logos). Also, note that the backgrounds will come in 4K (3840 x 2160) by default, but if you'd like 1080p or 1440p that's fine as well. So there you go! I hope you like it!

LordMastodon reacted to leadeater in Raid Card
You may have a 10Gb network connection locally but it's unlikely they have 10Gb internet connection. We as a University have 10Gb and 40Gb WAN connections across the country but our actual internet connection is slightly less than 1Gb and even then we only get about 20Mb-40Mb throughput to Azure.

One key point I would like to point out is that when buying a Dell server the only configuration options are standard RAID setups, if that is good enough for millions of customers it's good enough for that school. Just something to step back and think about.

I do agree there is a high cost going with Dell/HP etc but those costs are there for a reason. These vendors have to pay wages for employees to design multiple different components of each product line, run through extensive testing and validation of every possible configuration then pass this off to pre-sales engineers and sales/marketing departments. There is also the cost in having support centers and spare parts with express delivery. Everything adds up and has to scale across the world, lots of over heads.

To put some cost perspective in to the time I spent helping you if I were to go out to a customer and give the same amount of time you would be looking at between $2000-$4000 per day. I enjoyed helping though, it's something I like to do .

I actually used to work for an IT service company that exclusively worked in the education sector, here's a post I did a little while ago with a typical setup for a school of 1400 students/120~ staff/600 school owned devices/60~ Aruba APs and large student BYOD.

As the title says, my Internet is kind of shitty, and I'm kind of unfamiliar with how Folding@Home actually works. I've managed to install it and everything's working, but since the client opened in Chrome and the URL seems to be an actual website, not localhost or anything (albeit missing an HTTP/S:// at the beginning) I suspect it might work over the Internet. I just want to know if the fact that my Internet is crap will affect my Folding@Home performance. Thanks!

Yeah, I have reliable Internet, it's just slow.

That seems like it's probably the way it works, but like you said, it has to be assigned a new project and then upload the data, so that might be a bottleneck there.

I'm using the desktop client with web control, but I'd assume it has to send things over the Internet anyway in order to know what jobs it has to do and send data back to Stanford.

Anyway, speedtest.net says that I've got a ping of 14 ms, a down speed of 15 Mbps and an up speed of about 0.8 Mbps. Probably should have told you that earlier, now that I think about it, but there you go anyway. Will that be fine?

LordMastodon got a reaction from Redfern in Will bad Internet affect Folding@Home?
To clarify, you as a human being don't actually solve the problems, a server at Stanford sends your computer what is essentially a huge math problem and your computer takes advantage of CPU/GPU power you're not currently using and uses it to solve the math problem, and then when it's done it sends the results back to Stanford. This is known as distributed computing and is useful because all of the computers in the world combined have higher processing power than pretty much any supercomputer we can currently build, so people take advantage of that in an unobtrusive way.

That should be perfectly fine as long as it is
    somewhat reasonably stable. Your upload
is abit low, but not an actual problem as
    far as folding goes.

You download a work unit, do the work then
upload it, upload is usually bigger than the
    download. Considering you can download
a wu in anything from 1-5 seconds it
    shouldn't a problem.

I have to ask both of those questions 50% of the time these kinds of threads are posted. Please, someone make this a forum rule.

P.S. It's not really your fault and you probably didn't know that, and I'm really not blaming anyone in particular, but it's really a waste of time for me and you together to have to post 4 additional replies just so that I can even start helping you.
