Idiotic Forum rules...

RazerFX

Under the "Community Standards" section of this forum, resides this preposterous rule...

No advertising of any non LTT/LMG material

  • eBay/trading sites
  • Referral links
  • Personal websites or businesses
  • Twitch/YouTube links are only allowed in user profile status updates

I find this rule stupid.  There is a build log section of this forums, and not all people can afford new parts, so they link ebay sales for parts. I find this idiotic, this rule needs to be rid off! There should be 0 punishment for posting ebay links, its just plain stupid. It is not like this website is selling  PC components, the only thing sold is some sort of subscription to the website so there really is no "stealing" of "customers". This should be a forums where everything except pornography and toxicity is allowed. Please either update this rule if no longer in use or revise it staff.

The rule likely stems from a fear of:

  • Sketchy sellers
  • Sellers with only one item
  • Self advertising (that's what classifieds are for)

They're there to product the userbase. With that said, Ebay links from verified sellers (newegg's ebay page for example) should be allowed.

What I can do for now is explain some of the rational behind it: As you probably realize, some ebay sellers are fine and some are not so much.  We can't possibly review every ebay link posted around the forums, and so in the interest of not wanting to have people associate the forum with being linked to scammers, we've decided to just not allow them at all.

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

These rules are strict to prevent people from self-promoting or using the forums to make money in any way, or to scam people.

What's so hard if you selling a component on Ebay that somebody on here is in requirement of, that you just PM them the Ebay link and then they can make up their own mind?

If I may, its your own damn problem if you get scammed, and there is always legit checks that you can use like never sending payment as family/friends this way you can charge back or refund at any time. You shouldn't be responsible for users, the age range for this forums is most likely (from what I see) somewhere between 14 and 60, and I think we can all make informed decisions on how we spend our money.

it isnt a preposterous rule, and I think you need to tone your redundancy down. true, not everyone can afford new parts but ebay also isn't the best option for purchasing used parts. actually, this is precisely the reason Linus did a series on building full systems for next to nothing in which the majority of parts were purchased through craigslist. I'm sorry but there's little to no reason any member of this community cannot research and find the parts they are looking for themselves, if that is your major complaint.

That was just one reason. Other users have raised good points as well; it's also to try and prevent people linking to their own item and saying "hey look at this great deal", hence just using the forum to advertise.

exactly we can all make informed decisions on how to spend money so why do you need a forum to find all your parts for you? it isn't difficult to find used parts...

So you are saying craigslist is safe? Its literally the most unsafe platform to purchase things from. I'm the happy owner of two used gtx 980's and two used i7 3960X's and I have never experienced a computer scam on ebay, the only scam on ebay that I have encountered is scams for things like Rare Basketball sneakers which I'm pretty sure no one on this forum would really post as I highly doubt anyone is interested in that sort of thing on this particular forum. And how is it redundancy? Tell me if you could afford two new gtx 980s in october of 2015. I got one for $250 because it was missing the cooler and I got the second for $300 because the guy just didn't want it...

A lot of kids are on this forum. These rules are also an attempt to stop people from tricking them.

They also make it very clear exactly how people will win the giveaways that they do and exactly the account they will receive the message from. This proves that they are aware that people are abusing it to trick or scam people, and ltt are very big on security.

I don't think someone would sue Linus or Luke or whoever the other admins on this forums because of their poor decision making skills. And why would LMG even care about self advertising, they advertise crap low quality products on their channel that they would probably NEVER use because they get payed to say good things about them. Not even talking about reviews as those are mostly truth, but I'm talking about the ads that often come after the introduction.

If these kids are building computers on their own at this point I think they have a high enough I.Q. to avoid ebay scams.

craigslist is a locally based system, you go and check your hardware out in person, ask to see it working in person and if it doesnt don't buy it. as opposed to ebay, on the other hand, it is likely being mailed in with no way to confirm whether or not any part is in working condition.

as for redundancy, you used the words preposterous, idiotic, and stupid twice. I think you got your point across on how you feel about the rule from the title of your post..

you were right to say everyone can do their own research, and I'll say again that we're all smart enough to do this on our own without the need of anyones advertising on this forum.

No mod will punish you for linking a relevant video or a deal on ebay, the rules are there to prevent self advertising and fraud. There is no automated ban system here, the mods are live human beings capable of distinguishing what is allowed from what is not.

they're a business, and they have been completely transparent about that fact. they care about self advertising on their forum because it is THEIR forum. if you don't like it then find another one. Their advertisements function on public social media that allows them to do so.

I have seen a lot of posts in my 3 days of being on these forums that were like "check out my new youtube channel". The no external youtube rule is to stop people from exploiting these forums to get more views or subscribers, or even more money.
