Did you actually plug it into your CPU_FAN header? It matters because a lot of 4pin headers on motherboards don't have proper PWM control. The manual is very explicit about this as well. If you're using the 12v SATA power while not being plugged into the CPU_FAN(or a proper PWM signal header), it might run at full blast all the time, unless you just hook up the 4-pin header alone.

Then that would be your problem. Depending on the board, a lot of 4-pin fan headers only allow limited voltage control as opposed to PWM control (which is different and offers a wider range of adjustment).

i see. ive never had to reboot since they released the crimson drivers but maybe this is it. ive just had driver failures from unstable overclocks. thanks for you help, i feel better knowing that im not ruining the hardware

I probably worded it poorly, as it may seem like I implied hardware failure. I only meant a cutoff due to predescribed conditions in the vBios etc. Other than that, it could just simply be an unstable OC for that load, simple as that. This hanging behavior is consistent with an OC dropping out. NV cards in my experience tend to recover more often rather than flat out black/brown/grey screen. AMD cards more frequently require flat out reboots.

Whichever of the two is the more robust board with a good VRM. Z68 or 77 won't matter unless you really need a specific feature like M.2 or PCIE 3.0. In the case of the latter, if you're worried about GPU performance, it doesn't matter one bit.

How is Asus cheaping out on VRM heatsinks Intel's fault?  Asus has been designing motherboards for ages now, they should know how to make a proper heatsink. You can't believe that Intel and vendors DON'T go back and forth for months before launch, lol.

I hope he was being sarcastic. I mean, ASUS's engineers have to understand how physics works. Surely they knew they had less surface area with a raw slab than a grooved heatsink. Perhaps what they showed off at that event was simply a design concept, and not exactly intended to be a 100% representation of their finished product? Either way, can't really blame "Intel rushing X299" on heatsink designs that should be common sense by now. ASUS has been using grooved fins on their heatsinks for years, and to stop after knowing this launch would require cooling that houses a 10 core chip (at the very least, because it would make no sense for Intel to go backwards on core count), would be silly.

The Apex that was showed off at the pre-launch event, was a regression from even the X99 ROG boards, which at least used a horizontal fin stack on their heatsinks. Can't really blame time as an excuse to go backwards in design, when at least re-using what worked on X99, would have worked better than what they showed off.

It is exactly that. These people would rather save money cutting corners on performance, instead of removing the stupid RGB lightning and appropriating that funding to something functional. We are in this pointless "RGB race" where everyone and their mother needs RGB lightning for some reason. If it's not RGB, it's brushed aluminum. If it's not that, it's pointless anodized metal color schemes to fit "product branding".

For once, I'd love to see the cheaper boards be just as functional as the more expensive boards, just lacking the extra fluff features and aesthetically "pleasing" add-ons. Instead, we are left to suffer with trash that at least "looks good".

That's funny actually. I remarked recently on the fact that the TUF boards look "understated" now in comparison. I mean, truth be told, the RGB malarkey is sadly here to stay, which saddens me personally, (not to kink-shame anyone) but at least I know that its proliferation means cheaper implementation. So even that won't be an excuse for this stuff in due course (even now in some cases). I mean, it's no excuse either way, but just to make a point. Regarding sheer negligence though, when it comes to something that impacts efficiency and, as some would argue, component lifespan in favor of looks, I can just wish infinite RMAs upon them. RMA on you, RMA on yo' cow, RMA on yo' whole family.

If that's the case, I can only really chalk this up to turning tricks to milk an admittedly diminished market. I do like to look at my boards on occasion, but I can put up with some brown every now and then for the greater good.

Honestly if your productivity workloads are light as you say, and you mainly game at 1080p f.ex on these specs, you're pretty sorted for the time being. A 7700k on the same board is doable and very straightforward (you can read your board's manual online as to how you go about updating your BIOS if necessary), and will net you quite some extra performance (especially overclocked). That being said, it strictly depends on if you need it, whether you feel you're being hindered currently and how much money you are willing to spend on a machine. If you're not too fussed, a 7700k down the line will definitely get you more mileage than changing your entire platform which is going to cost you more. That also allows you some leeway when it comes to maybe upgrading other components down the line, like say your GPU.

Generally speaking, for the future, if you're more budget-conscious, but have some money to throw at a machine, it's best to bulk-purchase the best stuff you can buy at the time. It can save you money over time as you won't have to contemplate an incremental upgrade such as yours within the span of a year or two.

And I'd call that pretty tame considering this is the enthusiast platform, where the manufacturers pay a phat premium for the Chipset alone.
