As far as I can tell, yes.

Although to be honest the "safety" aspect in a random hotspot scenario is pretty minimal. HTTPS traffic is already encrypted and protected from man in the middle attacks - at worst a malicious actor would be able to log which websites your IP connected to. And if you're using your personal device at, say, a random bar, they wouldn't necessarily be able to trace it back to you.

As for this making VPNs "useless" as OP claims... I've always maintained that most of the marketing claims VPNs make are bullshit to begin with since, as mentioned, https itself already protects you in many ways and VPNs only "hide" your traffic from your ISP, if that. One legitimately useful (where legally permissible) application of VPNs however has always been accessing region locked or otherwise regionally unavailable content, which isn't affected by this vulnerability.

No, it does not. What I think kinda needs to die within the x86 are some of the legacy stuff but that may or may not affect backwards compabillity of some things and deciding which things should go may not be as straightforward.

It might actually die in some segments like convertible laptops since...

premium cars are being implemented with some of this stuff as well. Don't think X86 will go anywhere, anytime soon for the big 'ol gaming PCs though.

It's so much more complicated than that, and not all of us pay a lot for power.  Or make a lot more, relatively.

Nor do we have kids who we worry about inheriting the earth, etc etc etc. (added for non parents, of which I am not).

Pretty wild for something that's just always been there....

We can't help you bypass restrictions on your work computer, but maybe we can find a different solution to your problem.

If it's for work, I would talk to company IT. It's likely in their best interest to block that as well (e.g. for security reasons)

Sorry I'm not sure how to fix the issue, but just wondering could you contact the IT department to install an ad-blocker? They shouldn't really have a reason not to.

No it won't break the VPN connection, unless his company is malware 😛

A DNS server can't really block a VPN connection (or malware). It could refuse (or be unable to) to resolve the host name of your brother's work place to their IP, but that's about it. Once the IP has been resolved, the DNS server isn't involved anymore and the connection is between home and office.

The claim that their DNS "blocks malware" is also… well, it's marketing. The only thing they really do is refuse to resolve host names of sites that are classified as containing malware or adult content. That's it. They can't actively block the connection.

It's like saying my telephone book blocks you from calling adult hotlines. It may not contain their numbers, but that doesn't mean they don't still exist and can be called, if you get hold of the number any other way.

So if a kid is somewhat technically inclined, they can just reconfigure their PC to use any other DNS server and Cloudflare's "protection" is null and void. Or better yet, install a RasPi with their own caching DNS server, with any other DNS server as its upstream 😛

Just realised I've probably not clearly stated what I'm asking basically I'm just reassuring myself that cloudflare wont suddenly block my brothers VPN

Because if it does then I need to make sure i can undo it quickly

To be totally honest, were I in your shoes I'd have gone to BestBuy already and bought a new repeater. All that firewall, NAT hidden devices nonsense I don't mess around with. I prefer to have clear and concise functionality with good documentation. From the looks of it, the repeater / extender you're talking about looks pretty plug-and-play to me. I'm not confident that you'll have any luck messing around in the settings. Maybe just use it as an AP like you mentioned, why bother trying to get it to do something it wasn't made for?

Also, you said you were using static addressing but then mentioned that you have reserved addresses, implying that you have a DHCP server somewhere in your network...I'm not saying you CAN'T do that on one subnet, but I am saying that you're fucking batshit please use a vlan you madlad. Why would you EVER do that to yourself.

    150 Mbps to 180mbps normally

    40 mbps when dipping
    Router room 400-500mbps

Old house thick concrete walls built in 18 something.

BT WiFi extenders throughout the house providing rooms with over 120mbps but not really exceeding 200mbps

Did a factory reset of all network devices less than 3 months ago.

I moved the 2.4ghz and 5ghz band to a channel with minimal interference where possible.

Thats the info I can think off the top of my head but if you want me to conduct any tests or find out something please let me know.

Thank you very much I really appreciate this as my brother works from home so I make sure he has a solid Internet connection.

That's extreme, and barking at the wrong tree. The party whom transactions was with has done their part accordingly. So doing this and them having proof that they have done their part would A) not do anything, and B) get one blacklisted from attempted fraud.

Involving Newegg is good solution as they have contracted UPS as their delivery handler. They also might have some sort of insurance for more expensive shipments. While this might not quite fit to it, its something to look for too.

Sounds like UPS neglected to check ID. I would try to hold them responsible.

And don't take legal advice from idiots like us that don't even know what legal system you reside in.

I'm curious if that scammer just goes to UPS and picks something that looks interesting like a Newegg package. Or if they knew you specifically were expecting a shipment.

NH-D15 is great and all, I use one myself, but unless they're planning on keeping it forever or doing crazy nonsense like offset+direct die, its not worth it over the PA SE 120mm.

Precisely, physically the plastic slot is 16x but if you looked inside of it, there'd only be contacts on 1/4th of the slot. It is wired to the CPU at least, but not worth it just to get marginally better performance with an NH-D15 for 3x the cost and a whole different motherboard.

Bottom slot only supports pcie 4.0 x4, even if it’s x16 physically. This will pretty severely hinder the performance of a 7800XT
