Most of the time, you'll probably be direct playing (no transcoding) your media files. The times that you probably will be transcoding is if the device your playing your media files on is one that doesn't support a codec that the media files are encoded as when your ripping your DVDs & Blu-Rays. Or when you are remote streaming. Or when you want to upscale  (720p to 1080p and etc) or downscale (1080p to 720p and etc).

If you search on Youtube Byte My Bits, (if not allow to mention another channel, please remove), you will find him doing a ton of Plex server videos. It's how I learned most of Plex when I first got started.

If you decide to not want to have OS X on the drive, wipe it in Windows with Disk Management or if you wanna get geeky, Diskpart in CMD
You don't need to reset your motherboard. It will decide what to boot to. If not, change it back manually

You're making this more difficult than it has to be...

    - Unplug secondary router from the main, factory reset if needed if you can't remember any changes that you have made
    - Following the MAIN router's IP Addressing scheme, change the 192.168.1.1 to x.x.x.2 or x.x.2.2 (Replace the X with the numbers from the main router) then SAVE
    - Type in the new IP address that you just changed, then DISABLE DHCP Server. SAVE
    - Go into advanced routing, change the Operating mode from Gateway to Router. SAVE

You now have a switch with a built-in access point

Any IP addresses are determined by DHCP on the MAIN router. NOT the secondary
Don't plug incoming network from main router into the WAN port on the secondary. It will not work. Plug into the LAN ports

thunder9231 reacted to rufee in Why is it so hard to find modem/router combos?
Because all router modem combos are horrible, don't ask why they just are.
Its more worth it to buy a decent modem (ex. Motorola Surfboard for cable) and a stand alone router, these setups last longer and don't die every 5 minutes.

    These machines!!

I found a PC Gamer magazine dated back to May 2007. And in this magazine had ready for sale, awesome, gaming computers and laptops. These machines were expensive way way back. And to this day, building your own is still expensive, but a whole lot cheaper than these were.

Here's some pictures of the machines that were being sold. Mind you, some of these were from iBuypower and Cyberpower.

It's just a personal opinion but I'd flip the radiator around so there would be a shorter, cleaner run.

    But it looks good anyway!

I have the the same setup that you are talking about in my own home. Except I have a couple of old routers that I converted into switches, though I wish they were Gigabit and not 10/100...

    To answer:

    1) A regular ethernet cable work just fine. Just be sure it's Cat 5e. Cat 6 can be used though it's a bit overkill for home use but it doesn't hurt!
    2) Getting an unmanged switch, 5 port or 8 port (your choice) from Netgear. Run 1 cable to the switch from the router. The switch will take care of everything.
    3) If you set up Windows Server 2012 correctly and Anywhere Access, you'll be able to view, download, and add files to and from the server. It just take's time to setup. A lot of time. (I'm running Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2 and it saves me a few steps if you're using the Standard) [since you're using 2012, do this command in an elevated (administrator) on your client computers 'reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Server\ClientDeployment" /v SkipDomainJoin /t REG_DWORD /d 1' if you don't want your computers to join a domain since it forces when running the connector]
    4) That depends on how big your house is and how big of a radius of your router will emit. If you think that you'll need a wireless repeater, buy one.
    5) Like I mentioned in 2, unmanged.
    6) Sharing folders/drives on the server and then mapping them on Windows machines will do perfectly fine.

    No problem!

    This you do not need.

A single gigabit NIC that is either built in on the motherboard or a single gigabit expansion NIC will suit your needs plenty. As long as everything in the configuration is gigabit (10/100/1000), you will have very good transfer speeds within the network. A 100 MB file will transfer in 1 or 2 seconds on gigabit.

Missing Pets in BC has a great Facebook page that I wish more people were aware of. It's great that I have this huge (and awesome) group of people to help support me with something like this, but not everyone does, so I'd love for everyone who reads this to take a couple moments to find out if there's a similar local organiziation or facebook page or something and give them a like. What they do is so important to so many people.

They do more than just post the pets, but they can give advice and support about what information to provide and local animal shelters and the like.

I'm just so glad he's coming home... The last time I went out looking for him I didn't knock on doors... I was actually trying to see if I could smell decaying flesh in the woods near my house because I just wanted to know what happened to him...I tried not to but sometimes at night I couldn't help but lie there and think about how much it must have hurt to die from being eaten alive... And that that's what probably happened to my baby... I'm so glad he's safe. Even if whoever found him decided they didn't want to give him back, I would still be so happy to know he's okay... The fact that I'm getting him back is unbelievable.

Who ever has these modem/router combos, they should disable it and put it into bridge mode if they're going to have a separate router. I personally hate these things...
As for your drive configuration, I personally would use a dedicated drive for the OS, a small HDD or SSD, so you can benefit full storage from your other drives without having to partition the drive. It's what I have set up on my server.
I don't stream my music from my server as I use Google Play Music to do it for me

(Partition: OS and storage drive at the same time)

    UPDATE: Side panel window mod

I grew tired of stareing at the mesh sidepanel and wished that it was clear or was shipped with a window sidepanel. But nope. I changed it.

    Before:

Cut the polycarbonate to size. Could have done better on the cutting but it is what it is. Yes, I know the stickers are still on it..

Painted the edges a half inch to cover up the metal supports in flat black

Final result (Nexus 4 camera couldn't focus on this one for some reason)

    Installed!

My plan is to order the Bitfenix Alchemy White lighting strip 20cm to light up the inside of the case. When ever they get back instock...

I hope to order a new video card later this week or next week depending on when I get my money from PayPal into my bank account from my ebay auction which will end tonight (9/18/2013)

Will post updates as things come in

Now that a revised version with Haswell in it is coming out, kinda irritating me but I'm not upgrading it. I don't use it often on battery.
