Hi, I'm wanting to make my machine dual boot OSX. My specs are

CPU - I5 4670k @ 3.40ghz

MOBO - MSI Z87-G45

GPU - Gigabyte GTX 770 2GB

RAM - Corsair Vengeance 8GB

SSD - Samsung 840 Evo 250GB

HD - Westen Digital Black 1TB, Westen Digital 250GB

I already have a fully working Windows 8.1 system on my SSD, and on my 1TB movies and other stuff to do with the system. What i want to do is install OSX on the 250GB which is clean. I've looked into it and it doesn't seem too hard but I'm worried i wont be able to go back and fourth to easy. I don't want OSX to interfere with windows and i still want windows to be my main OS. I'm hoping someone can share they're experiences and give me some advice, thank you.

I would get a second SSD or HDD and then install OSX fully on that drive.

Then, unplug the Windows SSD and install OSX. Making sure that you have installed your bootloader etc.

After that, plug the Windows disk back in and carry on cruizin'!

However, it is worth noting that Windows will not be able to read the OSX drive and that OSX, whilst being able to read NTFS, it cannot write to it.

When you boot, the boot screen will show up and you should select windows. Oh, and make sure your OSX SSD is plugged into SATA port 0 for ease of booting.

Compatible with Windows 95

Installing on two separate drives is a hell of a lot more easier than installing on a single drive

  • This link helped me out when I was dual booting Windows 7/8/8.1 and OS X

http://www.tonymacx86.com/multi-booting/96000-guide-dual-booting-mountain-lion-windows-8-a.html

  • After installation of both, this link helps you ditch the USB to choose which OS you want to boot to. (NOTE: The drive with OS X must be booted first inorder for this to work AND in OS X)

http://www.tonymacx86.com/401-install-bootloader-extra-efi-partition.html

  • As for writing to an NTFS drive, this .pkg enables write permissions. Use the 10.8.2. It will work on Mavericks as well

Sure will. Just disconnect the drive that has Windows 8 before doing anything.

If it ends up not working after install, just back up files and such and reinstall Windows.

If i install mac and decide i don't want it, do i just remove the osx drive, reset my mobo with my cmos button and reconnect my windows drives?

Didn't get a notification for your reply

If you decide to not want to have OS X on the drive, wipe it in Windows with Disk Management or if you wanna get geeky, Diskpart in CMD

You don't need to reset your motherboard. It will decide what to boot to. If not, change it back manually
