The Logitech mice also have different profiles perhaps you are accidentally switching between them? I've never had an issue in many generations of Logitech mice. Set them up once, and forget it. Being primarily a Linux user I generally don't have access to their software anyways. I will say I make every profile / layer the same, remove them, forget it's been a long time now since I've set up my current G502.

As for the switches, meh, replace them with the nicer Japanese made switches when they fail and generally it isn't a problem again.

FWIW, G502X Lightspeed also has optical switches and with OMM, no software is necessary to be running at all. (This only works with Logitech G mice, btw)

I despised GHUB so when I realized OMM did what I needed and nothing more, I was sold.

The executable just lives on my desktop for the rare time I want to manually check battery life (though this mouse seems to last multiple months).

Its just one window with all the things you need in one place. I checked and you can set the G502X to lower than 1000hz since that's something you care about. I've also got the DPI button effectively disabled but only having a single DPI that never changes.

porina reacted to mariushm in General Inquiry, if CPUs used HBM like system RAM without an ability to upgrade, would you buy it?
I would like to see processors with HBM near die but still have at least ONE ddr4 or ddr5 memory controller to add slower memory (compared to HBM)

HBM memory has the benefits of WIDE bus, you have 1024 bits per HBM stack, so one or two stacks could work great for instructions like avx-512, and some things could be optimized to work with 512 - 1024 - 2048 bit chunks , filling cache lines in multiples of such values from HBM instead of slower DDR4/DDR5

v-cache would not be obsoleted by HBM or other near die ram, because that 64 MB of extra cache AMD adds is basically super fast SRAM that works really fast, quite faster than the memory ... and it's tightly integrated with lots of things inside the cpu that require very low latency... HBM would not be able to replace it.

Probably a hardware problem. Driver initialises some functionality that isn't used before that point then it all goes wrong.

If they haven't changed it, there is a config file way to "report results immediately". Projects can also influence it. Most projects probably don't do that to reduce server connection load.

It's not about the performance of the card. It's about when the architecture was released and when cards with it were last launched - that determines the window of support for the products.

Nvidia has supported Maxwell (even though the GTX 750 Ti is a 700 series card, it's actually Maxwell, same as the 900 series) for much longer than most thought they would - it's already been 10 years. It's kinda weird that they haven't axed support, honestly. My personal theory is that it's due to the Nintendo Switch and other Tegra products that use Maxwell - since they need to keep bringing game support and security updates for the Switch anyway, continuing them for the rest of Maxwell is less of a hassle.

You know I gave that warning about Windows Updates? I manually did my dedicated crunchers but forgot my gaming system so found that idle this morning. It had rebooted overnight so lost around 7 hours crunching there. Doh!

What is the definition of a supercomputer? Physically it is built for a task, but the compute side isn't special as far as I can tell. Basically it's a single socket EPYC CPU with 4 GPUs stuck on it assuming you want a big pool of storage too.

The L40S used seem to have the same core configuration as RTX 6000 Ada (few more than 4090), and L40S has slightly higher clocks at same rated power.

porina got a reaction from MiszS in Why are modern laptops SO hot?
Generally speaking Intel offerings have still lagged AMD offerings on process technology. For example, around the Zen 2 era AMD were on TSMC 7, while Intel was still on their 14 process. Today, it's Intel 7 vs TSMC 5. A "better" node will bring with it many benefits, but also one factor that can work backwards: the smaller size allowed means power density can increase. If you have the same power output therefore heat output, but one is say 2x the area of the other, it'll be a lot easier to cool.

You have to buy what suits your use case. To me, an APU system would basically be extremely low tier gaming as you turn down settings to get even 30fps never mind more. Battery life doesn't matter to me. If I use a gaming laptop it will be plugged in for max performance. The APUs kinda make some sense in the handhelds where the tiny screens mask the need to turn settings right down. Now I say that, has anyone benched say the Steam Deck vs a tablet? I know game choice wont be the same between them, but basically I'd rather use a tablet for low power games. I seriously debated if I even needed a desktop when I bought my current gaming laptop.

Idle temps don't matter. Most likely they turned the fans off or running at low speed to make it quieter. Cooling only turns up when it is really needed.

If you're not thermally throttling at idle, it really doesn't matter what temps you see, regardless if one is better than others.

As a guess, that specific case might be a combination of factors. The CPU is very low power (both in consumption and performance), on an older process so you got some surface area to work with. Lower power density means lower temps at same power. The laptop looks relatively big. Without looking at their other offerings, I'm going to guess they offered other CPU configurations in that form factor, so the cooling system was designed for them so they didn't have to end up making multiple. It's more cooling relative to the CPU than otherwise.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) is the routine Windows monthly patch day. Prepare as necessary. Personally I manually get it to update and reboot to get it out of the way. Otherwise you can pause updates.
